Space The Limited Frontier - A BIG Problem With Gaming

Editorial by Falconer on  Feb 05, 2011

I remember the old 8bit NES (also known as Famicom in native Nippon)the game graphics were basic at best. The games difficulty was high and they took forever to beat assuming you ever did. CD's were still a way off and memory cards had not been thought of yet. Mario Bros took me fore ever to get through andit took two people to figure it out.

NES Mario

Elite and Zelda II (back then a side scrolling RPG alot different to the game series it is today) finally incorporated a save feature that helped and started a revolution it would end up with amazing consoles like the original Playstation and the failed Sega Mega Drive.

The SNES was a 16bit console that allowed for better graphics, longer gameplay and new ways to tell stories. On the NES Mario was originally designed to have a moustache because his face looked like a part of his stomach. Now you could see Mario with more that his original three colors.

Cut-scenes became more important and dev teams became bigger because the new tech was pushing what was considered to be a game. This came with problems, first of all development time increased where as withthe NES you could bring out two or three games a year, now it took longer and as you can tell this gen longer still. Prices went up but still games were of good value as they were long.

The Nintendo 64 was an all mighty beast giving us the same problems on a 64bit scale, but this new revolution known as 3D changed the dev teams into massive groups working hard on games like Mario 64 and the amazing Zelda series that had move away from its RPG roots into some thing different.

The Playstation known then in short as PSX would be a rival for the Nintendo's dominance and finally made CD based console gaming work where Sega had failed. MB gaming had began. History repeated its self again, bu things began to change games became shorter (Excluding RPG Titles) and while the graphics were amazing the short times it took to beat them lessening the value of the game that in turnthat rose in a monetary sense anyway.

The Playstation 2 and new rival Microsoft with their Xbox inherited the same problems of their forbears. As did this gen in a repeating cycle.

With the exception of RPG's and RPS games, games are getting shorter even though the room is getting bigger and bigger. I played The Force Unleashed the other day and it took a day to beat it, for $100 that sucks! It was not necessarily easy but it was short.

Shorter to make can mean getting money quicker but as the cost of art, gamers lastingfun and wallet size.

After all above there is no such thing as unlimited space and there is no solution to this problem that I can think of but maybe with this bit of knolage you can.

As for DLC: $$$.

Just remember there are exceptions to the rule and I did not include the Wii because I have not used it and do not know mutch about it.

Memory Chart:

1Bit is 1 bianery digit.

1KB is 1,024 bytes.

1MB is 1,024 kilobytes, or 1,048,576 bytes.

1GB is 1,024MB

A terabyte (TB) is 1,024GB (Consoles are not there yet) this is around 1,610 CDs worth of data!

A petabyte (PB) is 1,024TB (Currently a PC with this is being developed in Indiana University).

An exabyte (EB) is 1,024PB.

A zettabyte (ZB) is 1,024EB.

Finally, a yottabyte (YB) is 1,024ZB. Imagine a game with this! Might take 3000 years to complete it though lol.

I recherched my above tech section through the UNI Of Indiana.

Quick profits or longevity?
