Since it was revealed at E3 2015 Metroid Prime: Federation Force as received massive backlash from fans. While Nintendo has acknowledge this criticism those still waiting for a traditional Metroid experience should’ve fret. Many other titles are currently available that taken the Metroid formula and remodeled it into outstanding games. These are some of the best non-Metroid games that Metroidvania fans should check out.
5. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
This extraterrestrial adventure has players navigating a bizarre alien word as you attempt to save your planet from a parasitic invasion. Get ready for a daring journey filled with hostile creatures, hidden areas and many upgrades to collect. This is an enthralling world teeming with alien life, and despite its short length it’s worth exploring.
4. Shadow Complex
This 2D gem was developed by Epic Games and Chair Entertainment back in 2009. Released in 2009 this epic tale follows Jason Flemming as he attempts to save his girlfriend from an army of highly trained soldiers. Complete with incredible gameplay featuring a myriad of weapons, great narrative and fantastic boss battles if you owned an Xbox 360 and love Metroid style games this is a must play.

As Juan players will battle their way through a world inspired by traditional Mexican culture and folklore to rescue El Presidente’s daughter. Combining a myriad of different elements this game features traditional Metroid-style exploration. However unlike other 2D Metroid games expect a heavy emphasis on combat and dimensional switching mechanics to mix things up. These moves won’t only help Juan in combat but aid in traverse the world of Guacamelee.

Outland uses light and dark swapping mechanics to allow players to damage enemies using the opposite color. Players must use this mechanic absorb and repel damage from obstacles and attacks with the same color. This intense risk reward system requires precision in order to survival the many trials in this lust adventure. Coupled with lively visuals, dynamic puzzles and large 2D environments to explore and you have an excellent variation of a Metroid game.

Possibly one of the best Castlevania games ever create this fantastic title is worth investing if love intense boss battles, varied environments and an outstanding soundtrack. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night doesn’t follow a whip-wielding Belmont but instead a son of Dracula, Alucard. This vampire must navigate his father’s castle collecting rare relics and facing deadly creatures while attempting to uncover the hidden mysteries within.
