User Choice Awards - Winners
Welcome one and all to the User Choices for the Game of the Year Awards 2009!
by Fishdalf on Jan 07, 2010
Welcome one and all to the User Choices for the Game of the Year Awards 2009! Wow, that was a mouthful. Think of this as the little brother of the ceremony, packed with bite-sized morsels of information as oppose to a full blown soiree. Once again, thanks for taking the time to vote.
Each category was voted on by our forum members and tallied up until an eventual victor was found, and hopefully should voice the opinions of our users fairly well. There’s also a special user award thrown in towards the end for good measure, so without further ado I’ll announce the winners:
Best Console
Nominees: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii.
And the winner is…
PlayStation 3 – 74.29%
Xbox 360 – 17.14%
PlayStation 2 – 5.71%
Nintendo Wii – 2.86%
We kick off with a rather obvious choice. The PlayStation 3 absolutely steam-rolled over the opposition with almost 75% of the vote. The general consensus praised the console’s exclusives, “Playstation 3 hands down. KZ2 (Killzone 2), MW2 (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2), Demon's Soul, Uncharted 2. Too many exclusive/awesome games to choose my 360 =),” said a forum user.
The Nintendo Wii came in dead last, very disappointing for a console that saw so much success last year. It didn’t even receive half of the percentage the PlayStation 2 did.

Best Handheld
Nominees: DS (including DSi), PSP (Including PSP Go), iPhone (including 3GS).
And the winner is…
Nintendo DS (including DSi) – 38.24%
PSP (including PSP Go!) – 32.35%
iPhone – 29.41%
Nintendo initially galloped into the lead, but positives and negatives were bandied around for each system and slowly the votes for PSP and iPhone began to creep in. Nintendo hung on valiantly though to take the User Choice crown for 2009. One user marked it as a, “well deserved victory,” stating, “there’s sure to be many more handhelds to come from them in the future, most I’ll probably end up buying.”

Best Action/Adventure Game
Nominees: Assassin's Creed II, InFamous, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham Asylum.
And the winner is…
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – 43.75%
Batman: Arkham Asylum – 28.13%
Assassins Creed II – 21.88%
InFamous – 6.25%
It seems like we’re not the only one’s crazy about Drake and his gun-slinging adventures. Not only did he bag NoobFeed’s Action/Adventure title and Game of the Year 2009, but it seems he’s scooping up your votes too. Marco Cecilio, NoobFeed staff member is convinced our fair members got it bang on the money, “All of them seem to be very strong candidates, still, there's one that was simply better than the others: Uncharted 2.”

Best Shooter Game
Nominees: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Wolfenstein.
And the winner is…
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 88.57%
Killzone 2 – 8.57%
Wolfenstein – 2.86%
Resistance 2 – 0%
Not really much diversity in opinion here, but in all honesty we never expected there to be. The game had a big impact on the industry, gamers included, and that reflects here. To quote but a few of you guys, “It is the easiest poll of all,” “Modern Warfare should win no doubt,” “Lol of course everybody would vote for Modern Warfare 2.”
We could go on, but we won’t.
Poor Resistance 2, it seems some users believed it to be a 2008 game only. While true to an extent, it was released in certain countries in 2009, thus qualifying it for voting.

Best Rhythm Game
Nominees: Guitar Hero 5, Lego Rock Band, The Beatles: Rock Band, Rock Band 2.
And the winner is...
Rock Band 2 – 32.26%
Beatles: Rock Band – 29.03%
Guitar Hero 5 – 22.58%
Lego Rock Band – 16.13%
Not the most convincing result, but a result none-the-less. As we stated in our main feature; there was little to choose between many of the rhythm games of the past year, only preference separates them by any great length.
Lego Rock Band seemed to fail because, “had the song list been larger,” it would have taken a few more votes. Whilst Beatles: Rock Band lost votes with some because, “playing The Beatles over and over and over again without any other songs by any other band becomes maddening after an hour.”

Best Role-Playing Game
Nominees: Demon’s Souls, Dragon Age: Origins, Torchlight, Borderlands.
And the winner is…
Dragon Age: Origins – 36.36%
Borderlands – 33.33%
Demon’s Souls – 27.27%
Torchlight – 3.03%
The User Choice for Role-Playing goes to Dragon Age: Origins, edging the later released Borderlands by a whisker. The award-winning game seems to have won many of our forum users over also, “Dragon Age, by far. The simple fact that it's Baldur Gate's spiritual follower makes it pretty clear that it's a game that offers a lot. And it does,” “Easy choice for me, it's the best RPG I played the last couple of years and it's Dragon Age Origins,” “Dragon Age Origins made my gaming year of 2009. It’s awesome!!”

Best Puzzle Game
Nominees: Braid, Cuboid, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.
And the winner is…
Braid – 70%
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box – 16.67%
Cuboid – 13.33%
There was only ever going to be one winner here, with such innovation on display how could it ever differ. A NoobFeed staff member sums it up nicely, “Braid is one of those rare exceptions that comes around every so often in the gaming industry; a brilliantly innovative idea on a low budget. It may be short, but crikey! – it certainly is sweet.”

Best Sports Game
Nominees: Forza Motorsport 3, Fifa 10, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, Wii Sports Resort.
And the winner is…
Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 – 30.3%
Fifa 10 – 30.3%
Forza Motorsport 3 – 30.3%
Wii Sports Resort – 9.09%
That’s right, it’s a 3-way tie!! Nothing could split your votes at the time of tallying, and while we could have waited a little longer we thought it fate and split this years’ Sports award. If you want a definitive choice then check out our staff picks via the link below. Each game has their strengths and weaknesses: one steadying the ship, one dropping the anchor, and one well on its way to pillaging a genre.

Best Fighting Game
Nominees: Ultimate Fighting Championship 2009, Tekken 6, Street Fighter IV, Fight Night Round 4.
And the winner is…
Street Fighter IV – 61.76%
Tekken 6 – 23.53%
Fight Night Round 4 – 8.82%
Ultimate Fighting Championship 2009 – 5.88%
With so much competition in the genre for 2009 it’s a great testament to Street Fighter for finishing top of the pile. Tekken 6 might have instilled freshness into its single player, but Street Fighter focused more on the package as a whole, bringing everything together to create “the ninja of fighting games – a master in every style of combat.”

Best Platformer Game
Nominees: Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Trine, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, ‘Splosion Man.
And the winner is…
New Super Mario Bros. Wii – 43.75%
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time – 40.63%
Trine – 15.63%
‘Spolsion Man – 0%
Another close one, but retro gaming brought into modern gaming wins over once again. “I voted for Super Mario is because it doesn’t just become 'another platformer'. It took a formula that works and that we are familiar with and added a completely new edge to it.” We just love it because four Yoshi’s simultaneously causing havoc on screen means four times the fun!”

Best Peripheral
Nominees: Wii MotionPlus, Logitech G19 Keyboard, The Beatles: Rock Band Instruments, DJ Hero Turntable.
And the winner is…
Logitech G19 Keyboard – 47.37%
Wii MotionPlus – 21.05%
The Beatles: Rock Band Instruments – 15.79%
DJ Hero Turntable – 15.79%
We were kind of shocked by this one. While our NoobFeed staff came up with the same result we thought less of you would have tried the keyboard for yourself and were almost sure the potential of the MotionPlus would have shined on through. The G19 really is an impressive piece of kit and sets the bar for gaming keyboards of the future.

Smart Phone – 2.7%
The legions of PC fans have spoken. That’s all we have on that one…

GAME OF THE YEAR
Nominees: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, Street Fighter IV, Dragon Age: Origins, New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
And the winner is…
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Well, well, well, it seems that the NoobFeed users have a similar opinion to our own. It was a close-fought contest and one that saw Uncharted 2 take a hefty lead, but Modern Warfare 2 clawed its way back into contention, only to be beaten by what we feel – and now you – the better game in the end.
That now makes it a clean sweep, collecting the award for every category it was nominated for. Not bad going at all.

One last thing before we go. We would like to give one final award to a user of this site, for showing more dedication than any other. They really have shown a commitment above and beyond the call of duty and gave us constant feedback throughout our entire journey. So much so that we’ve asked him to become a part-time member of our writing staff, he is of course… ILIAS.
Thanks to everyone for reading and taking part in our User Choices for the Game of the Year Awards 2009 feature and giving your continued support for the site. Next year we will be doing our awards a little differently, and giving you the chance to not only vote on the choices, but also nominate them also. Until then look out for many great and upcoming NoobFeed features in 2010.
Subscriber, NoobFeed
