Xbox One used games will require a online authentication, but no fee

According to Polygon from “sources familiar with the system†the Xbox One won’t require a fee to reactivate a used. Instead a regular online check will be require a “regular online spot check to verify authenticity of games being playedâ€. In a discussion with Kotaku, Phil Harrison, explained that the console would require an internet connection to verify the console every 24 hours but it didn’t have to be always online.

The console still requires an internet connection to ensure full functionality, but according to Polygon the company is experimenting with “special exemption codes†that will allow access in internet fee zones.According to Polygon’s sources that the confusion surrounding the system that will be used to authentic used games and internet requirements that have spark massive discussions over the internet. They plan to clarify these muddled statements before E3.

Apparently the Xbox One will automatically authenticate games using an encryption code that is coded into the game, when it’s installed into the Xbox One. That key is then install onto the hard drive and verified regularly through an internet connection. However when a person sells that game or it’s installed onto another system the original machine code is deauthenticated until the disc is reinstall onto the system and re-authenticated. No fee for selling or reactivating were confirmed by Polygon’s sources.

According to Xbox’s Major Nelson in a tweet “The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox†and “Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future.â€
