Gamefly Shutting Down Streaming Service

Streaming services have increasingly become more popular. In the gaming world, Xbox Game Pass is one top with its $9.99 access to hundreds of Xbox One games along with day-one access to Xbox One exclusives. However, Gamefly is shutting down their streaming service at the end of the month.

Gamefly would provide access to games using smart TV's and streaming devices but as of August 31st, no customer will be charged for the service. The disc-based rental service will remain in effect.

It's unclear why the service was removed but its likely due to EA. Gamefly was purchased by EA, likely for its streaming technology, and with EA's Origin Access Premiere now available it's likely the company didn't want the competition. In addition, EA eliminated the On the House promotion.
