Mafia 4 Expanding Into Multiplayer—Hangar 13 Job Listing Reveals New Gameplay Plans

An alleged Hangar 13 job listing points toward network gameplay and could signal a major change for the next Mafia game.

Mafia 4 could be in active development, the fourth main installment in the series. There is still some ambiguity over exactly what project this leak is referring to, though, as it could potentially be related to a sequel to Mafia: The Old Country.

The information comes from ResetEra, so you should treat it as a rumor rather than confirmed information. Still, the details in the reported job listing are interesting because they could indicate that the series might introduce multiplayer.

According to the information being discussed, a new Hangar 13 job listing for a Lead VFX Artist appears to hint that the next Mafia game could include multiplayer features.

The listing reportedly asks for experience with multiplayer or network gameplay VFX challenges while describing the project as an upcoming AAA title built using Unreal Engine 5. That requirement stands out because the Mafia series has traditionally been built around cinematic single-player experiences.

The wording of the listing could also point toward something more specific than a traditional competitive multiplayer mode. Because the listing reportedly mentions a heavy narrative focus, a co-op campaign seems like one possible direction. Instead of turning Mafia into a competitive multiplayer game, Hangar 13 could potentially build multiplayer features around the existing story-driven structure.

You could also see the developers adding smaller multiplayer features rather than making the entire game dependent on online play. For instance, some missions may provide you with specific goals that need to be accomplished within a certain time frame, while other challenges may promote different approaches.

One challenge could require you to complete a mission in stealth; another could reward you for going in with guns blazing. Your performance could then be compared through online leaderboards, giving you a reason to return to missions you have already completed.

That kind of system could create considerably more replayability without forcing the Mafia series into an entirely different genre. The idea is somewhat similar to how IO Interactive approaches its Hitman games, where you can replay the same missions while experimenting with different methods, objectives, and restrictions.

A similar structure could potentially work for a Mafia game, especially if the missions are designed with multiple approaches from the beginning. The upcoming James Bond game, 007 First Light, has also been mentioned as another example of the kind of mission-based challenges that could potentially inspire this approach.

There is still no clear indication of which Mafia project this job listing actually relates to.

Reports have previously suggested that Mafia 2 is getting a remake, while Mafia: The Old Country is also reportedly set to receive DLC later this year. There is also the possibility that Hangar 13 is working on a sequel to The Old Country, which could potentially be the game connected to these multiplayer requirements.

The possibility of a new mainline game is particularly intriguing, especially since fans have heavily discussed one setting for years. A Mafia game set in Las Vegas during the 1970s or 1980s could be a natural fit for the next major entry, potentially becoming Mafia 4 or even Mafia 5 depending on how the series is positioned.

That era and location would give Hangar 13 plenty of opportunities to build a different type of Mafia experience. It could also work especially well with the potential multiplayer features suggested by the job listing.

A 1970s or 1980s Las Vegas setting would provide the developers plenty of room to experiment with different mission types and activities. You could have traditional story missions alongside side quests, raids, and alternate versions of missions you have already completed.

Those missions could then be replayed with different objectives or restrictions, giving the game a structure that encourages you to approach the same content in several ways. A system like this could provide the replayability that the rumored multiplayer elements appear to be aiming for.

The same idea could also work particularly well with co-op. Instead of simply adding a separate multiplayer mode that has little connection to the main story, Hangar 13 could allow two or more players to work through selected missions together. The game could still maintain its single-player narrative while giving you additional challenges designed around cooperative play.

A Mafia 2 remake, however, seems like a much less likely candidate for these multiplayer features.

Mafia 2 was designed as a strictly narrative-focused single-player experience, and rebuilding it with a full co-op campaign would require significant changes to how its missions and story work. The game is unlikely to become a cooperative experience.

That distinction is important because Take-Two and Hangar 13 would presumably understand how important the narrative side of Mafia is to its identity. Even if they introduce multiplayer, the series does not necessarily need to move away from its cinematic storytelling.

The success of Mafia: The Old Country and the reported greenlighting of the Mafia 2 remake could give the developers more confidence in continuing to invest in the franchise. A new game could therefore attempt to combine the traditional single-player experience with additional multiplayer content.

A new mainline Mafia game set in 1970s or 1980s Las Vegas would arguably be one of the more interesting ways to make that happen. The setting has been a popular choice among fans who have speculated about where the series could go next, and it would provide developers with a completely different environment to work with.

Las Vegas also naturally lends itself to a wide range of criminal activities, locations, and mission ideas. This could help to make optional content around the main story more feasible, without making the game feel repetitive as a whole.

Then the multiplayer features could be an extension of that content instead of the main event.

You can still have a classic single-player campaign with a strong story but have separate missions and challenges available for co-op and online competition. Leaderboards could track completion times or specific objectives, while different playstyles could give players reasons to return to missions.

That could also help the series avoid some of the repetition that affected parts of Mafia 3's base game. They could design missions with different objectives and approaches to encourage replayability, rather than just filling the map with similar things to do.

After the main story is done, a system of stealth runs, combat-focused challenges, time trials, and cooperative objectives could add value to these missions. This would create a Mafia game that still has a story but would also give players more ways to play after completing the campaign.

For now, though, the biggest takeaway is that Hangar 13 may be preparing something different for the next Mafia project.

The reported Unreal Engine 5 job listing does not confirm that Mafia 4 will have a co-op campaign or any particular multiplayer mode, and it does not identify which Mafia game the position is connected to.

It does, however, suggest that network gameplay could be part of an upcoming project, making the possibility worth watching. If the listing connects to the next mainline Mafia game, multiplayer could become one of the biggest changes the series has made yet.

The most compelling scenario would be a game that keeps Mafia's cinematic single-player identity while adding optional multiplayer challenges on top of it. A Las Vegas setting in the 1970s or 1980s could provide plenty of opportunities for that structure, with a large campaign supported by side missions, raids, alternate objectives, and replayable challenges.

Rather than replacing the single-player experience, co-op and leaderboards could simply give you more reasons to return to the content. For a series that has traditionally focused almost entirely on its story, this would represent a significant but potentially natural evolution.
