Sony's announcement that it will cease manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028 has raised concerns about the industry's shift towards an all-digital future. The announcement has sparked debate among players who feel that physical games still play an important role in ownership, game preservation, lending, and the second-hand resale market, although games launched before the deadline will remain available.

While many consumers have blasted the move, new market data released suggests that the ongoing decline of physical game sales is a big reason behind Sony's strategy. Many gamers argue that removing physical media is unnecessary and premature. Still, since digital purchases continue to dominate the gaming industry, the company is viewing the transition as a long-term business decision.

Sony's digital strategy has split the PlayStation community.

This announcement has caused a lot of talk across the gaming community, with many PlayStation gamers upset about the move away from physical copies. Collectors and long-time fans say that digital purchases can't fully replace the benefits of owning physical copies, especially when it comes to preserving games, lending them to friends, or selling them through the second-hand market after completion.

Others say the decision reflects a change in consumer behavior, not just a corporate preference. As digital storefronts dominate the roost for software sales, it's increasingly difficult to outlay the costs of physical production from a business perspective. So the debate has shifted beyond nostalgia to whether Sony is responding to changing demand or accelerating the disappearance of physical gaming.

The latest sales figures for the PlayStation reveal a glimpse of where the industry is headed.

The conversation grew even more heated when Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shared recent sales data to explain Sony’s decision. His figures highlight just how dramatically the physical games market has changed over the past two decades, even though some players argue the data mainly reflects corporate priorities rather than the habits and preferences of dedicated physical game collectors.

According to Circana, only seven PlayStation games sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the US during the first half of 2026, and none sold more than 275,000 copies. In comparison, nearly 100 titles reached the same milestone in 2008, illustrating how sharply physical software sales have declined despite a loyal group of consumers continuing to support boxed game releases.

Physical game sales continue to decline throughout the industry.

The drop isn't just limited to PlayStation alone. Overall, the U.S. console market's annual physical software sales have fallen from about 292 million units in 2009 to just 37 million units by mid-2026. Over time, digital downloads are expected to be the primary way to buy games, although individual results from region to region and supply constraints may vary.

The figures also show a widening gap between what people are buying and support for physical media. Despite the prevalence of talk about game ownership in online discussions, sales data indicates that the vast majority of consumers now prefer digital versions. That shift has changed the way that publishers and platform owners think about distributing software over the long term.

That change could shape the future of PS6.

That sharp decline still leaves a sizeable audience, with around 37 million physical games sold each year, leading many gamers to argue it is far too early to abandon discs completely. Critics believe Sony should not force players to choose between digital distribution and physical releases, but instead continue supporting both formats to give consumers greater flexibility and choice.

Still, long-term sales trends explain why Sony seems committed to growing its digital ecosystem ahead of future hardware like the PS6. Regardless of whether players agree or not, the latest market data indicates that physical gaming is becoming an ever-smaller element of the PlayStation business, with digital distribution as the company's main focus in the coming years.
