After years of development, Arkavi Studios has released Lords of the Black Sun in full on Steam. It had undertaken an Early Access project prior to that, which sort of just pushed out its launch build out of the blue.

Still, this is one more space strategy title in the 4X conquest genre that publisher Iceberg Interactive can add to its catalog. Lords of the Black Sun has a heavy focus on the socio-political aspect of running an empire, which is a bit different from the usual building focus. There’s a sizable espionage system to sabotage opponents, citizens need to be content lest they rebel, pirates can mess up your journey, conspiracies can take out an empire from the shadows; there’s a bunch to take into account.

Naturally, there is some combat involved in Lords of the Black Sun as well. This happens on a separate hex grid and gets decided with certain finite move points to improve tactical decisions. Units can be upgraded and ships can be designed from scratch for more customization options.

Lords of the Black Sun has had quite the unique run, ever since we first previewed its earliest stages. It was then still known as Star Lords, though it recently opted for a name change, likely due to Guardians of the Galaxy making that brand too risky for copyright infringement issues. Moreover, developer Arkavi Studios also used to be known as Neogen2 Creations. What a metamorphosis in the end there. It feels great to see a game grow so much from its humble beginnings though. We’re excited to have been there since the start.

Lords of the Black Sun is available now on Steam for €23.79, which is a 15% discount of its normal price of €27.99. There’s a launch trailer that may get you excited for some 4X action.
