New allegations and rumors are reigniting excitement in the gaming community about an Uncharted 5 release. New reports reveal early planning for the next installment, turning light curiosity about a mysterious teaser image into a more concrete conversation.
Fans thought a canon research snapshot suggested an Uncharted return a week ago. The question was whether the clue meant a remake or a sequel. Even though speculation didn't yield a clear answer, it did pave the way for a broader conversation. A new report suggested Uncharted 5 was planned before COVID-19.

Industry-wide, the timing makes sense. Studio giants like Naughty Dog balance creative risks with proven properties. The studio is known for inventiveness and innovative concepts, but Uncharted's commercial and critical success make it an appealing continuation. PlayStation may favor series revival over new IP.
Development history is another issue. It's possible that pandemic-related disruptions and altering studio priorities delayed Uncharted 5's development in 2019 or 2020. The Last of Us Part II, multiplayer projects, and other internal developments may have delayed a sequel.
Revival years ahead?
If not abandoned, those early plans may have been put on hold. Key developers, including Uncharted: The Lost Legacy veterans, have returned, supporting a rebirth. With experienced people back at the studio, adapting an old idea into a whole production is easier.
Interesting, this reasoning also diminishes the case for remaking Uncharted. Given the age of the first game, a remake would be a big change from a sequel. If sequel ideas remain, a remake would look like a creative step backward from Uncharted 5.
Nathan Drake is another important topic. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End completed Drake's journey, the franchise's heart. Many considered that finale the perfect goodbye, sparking questions about whether the character should return in a big way. Drake shouldn't be completely absent, but he shouldn't take over, say fans and pundits. A supporting or cameo role for him might keep the series going without damaging the previous game's emotional ending.
Thus, new heroes can appear. The next game will likely star Cassie Drake, Nathan Drake's daughter. Uncharted 4 prepared her for more adventures. It's great to see that the group is so diverse; Sam Drake and Chloe Frazer could also play important parts.
The franchise is bigger than one hero.
What makes Uncharted great is its universe and themes, not a single character. Unlike franchises named after their protagonists, Uncharted may change protagonists without losing its identity. This lets developers create new stories without being limited to Nathan Drake.
As speculations emerge, Uncharted 5 remains a possibility. There are more and more signs from inside the company that the brand may not be finished, even if the idea is still just an idea.
