Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the fresh start in the series, has received a release date. This week, publisher Koch Media announced that the latest entry of this open world game will launch on November 13, 2020. Platforms will be PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One, PC via Steam, as well as a specifically mentioned Windows 10 build.

More importantly, the release date stated that Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be available on launch day for Xbox Series X, but not for PlayStation 5 (PS5). This presents a time-sensitive matter, where Microsoft has a leg up on Sony. Microsoft is putting in considerable effort around their Smart Delivery program, which tries to bridge the gap between their systems: Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X and Windows 10. Through Smart Delivery, the Xbox ecosystem detects the most ideal platform and pushes that version out, requiring the consumer to only purchase one copy, whether that's on Xbox One or PC or the next generation console.

With the Coronavirus providing some unique challenges to the next gen units coming this holiday season, having an additional wave of ports available for Xbox Series X is a considerable step up. Consumers greatly prefer having the best version of a game available, even if a user base is larger on a current gen console. In previous generations, games like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag required an update cost to go from PS3 to PS4. Now, any of the games that are still able to make a holiday window without delay, could all favor Xbox Series X, considering the cost is the same regardless of the platform. Clearly, the development architecture for Microsoft platform is more uniform and expedites versions.

PS5 previously revealed their strategy, which still relies on exclusives, such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Additionally, Sony is following the idea of offering free upgrades. For instance, anyone who buys Assassin's Creed Valhalla on PS4 can get a PS5 version as well.

We asked both Koch Media and developer Sega for clarification, but neither replied for comments.

It is interesting to see that the Yakuza series, which has been synonymous with Sony for a long time, will now be best on an Xbox, at launch. That move certainly sends a message that Microsoft is willing to spend considerable effort this generation. Yakuza: Like a Dragon will revitalize the series with a new protagonist and a new combat system, so there's no better time to flip consoles to get in on the action.
