PopCap Announces Bejeweled 3

By Daavpuke, Posted 01 Nov 2010

“The challenge in creating a new version of Bejeweled is to innovate and keep it fresh and exciting without losing touch with the gameplay that people love.” said Jason Kapalka, co-founder and chief creative officer at PopCap Games.

And with this, they have announced to release a new sequel to the popular puzzler to ship out worldwide on December 7, 2010. North America will also be able to purchase the game at numerous retail outlets.

Bejeweled 3 promises to update the known “match-3” system and expand upon the game modes of its predecessor. But it doesn’t stop there; PopCap will also include al-new features such as Quest, Lightning and the soothing Zen mode, all in high definition. But you’ll also be able to show off your puzzling skills to your friends by earning 65 badges. Yes, everyone knows the powerful call off cheap achievements.

In all, Bejeweled 3 will include:

·         Classic: Updated gameplay of the tried and true mode.

·         Quest: Journey through 40 magical puzzles in this multifaceted challenge

·         Zen: Personalize your experience with ambient sounds and binaural beats.

·         Lightning: Charge up with a beat-the-clock bout of gem-blasting.

·         Secret Games: Unlock 4 all-new games including Butterflies and Ice Storm

·         Badges: Earn up to 65 badges to prove your skills

David Cole, founder and president of DFC Intelligence has high hopes on the new game: “No other casual game comes close to the success of Bejeweled.  PopCap has been able to keep the franchise strong because they have focused on quality and innovation and have not flooded the market with dozens of sequels. I fully expect Bejeweled 3 to not only be a big success, but also ensure Bejeweled continues to grow in popularity over its next decade on the market.”

Those strong words might be proven right, according to these numbers. Bejeweled has become one of the top 10 video game franchises in history. More than half a billion people  have played it and over 50 million units were  sold across 17 platforms. An estimated 7.5 billion hours have been spent playing Bejeweled, and the game continues to sell at the rate of one copy every 4.3 seconds.

The announcement comes with some screenshots and a trailer to give you a little taste of the new modes available, such as the enticing Poker mode that is sure to spawn its own line of addicts.

  • Uh oh a poker mode? I know some puzzle game and poker fanatics who will love and spend far too many hours on that part.

I play Bejeweled on the occassion when I want to burn some time or just feel like a fix.

Comes out this December as well! Hmm... Don't know that I'll spend any money on it...but maybe they will give it away like they did Bejweled 2 for a time.

  • Never could get into the second game (that Daav helped me get for free ;) ). Still, they have a huge fan base...good for them I guess.
