Gaming is one of many favorite pastimes that each of us all around the world continues to enjoy on a regular basis, with a huge variety of different types of games to play. In fact, many will argue that it is difficult to ever beat the classic and traditional video games that are played on consoles such as the PlayStation or the Xbox Series X that are continually released by developers due to the fact that technology continues to play a role and helps them to be as immersive as possible. However, there have been some developers that have made us wait a little longer than perhaps we could have ever imagined we would have had to!

Beyond Good & Evil 2, Most Delayed Game Ever

Indeed, fans of the Beyond Good & Evil series are still waiting for its next release, with the title having recently been crowned the most delayed game ever! With that in mind, we thought we would take a look at the 5 most delayed video games in history, and what had happened once they were released; it did not always make for positive reading.

1. Beyond Good & Evil 2 - More than 5,234 days

The sequel to the 2003 action-adventure game Beyond Good & Evil has been in development for over 14 years, having been first announced in 2008. The game was initially supposed to be released in 2011 but has been delayed multiple times since then due to development difficulties. More and more delays have been announced since, and with no release date scheduled or even touted, it remains a mystery as to when we can finally play it!

2. Duke Nukem Forever - 5,156 days

The sequel to the 1996 first-person shooter Duke Nukem 3D was first announced in 1997, but development difficulties and numerous changes in developers meant that the game was not released until 2011, more than 14 years later. The long development cycle and numerous delays resulted in the game becoming one of the most highly anticipated games ever as many enjoyed the previews that were made, but unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype and was widely panned by critics upon release.

3. Diablo III - Eleven Years

The development of this title started in 2001, and the game was finally released in 2012. Blizzard, the game's developer, had to scrap the game's development several times before getting it right. One of the biggest delays for this game was caused by the switch from 2D to 3D graphics midway through development.

4. Too Human - Nine Years

This action role-playing game was first announced in 1999 and went through numerous delays before it was finally released in 2008. The game's development was troubled from the start, with the original developer Silicon Knights suing Epic Games (the developers of the Unreal Engine) for $4.45 million over engine issues. The case was eventually settled and Too Human was released for the Xbox 360, although it has since been discontinued.

5. L.A. Noire - Seven Years

This crime thriller game was first announced in 2004 and was not released until 2011. The game's development was delayed due to the switch from 2D to 3D graphics, as well as engine issues. L.A. Noire was a critical and commercial success upon release on consoles such as the PlayStation.

6. Resident Evil 4 - Six Years

This survival horror game was first announced in 1999 and wasn't released until 2005. The game's development was plagued by engine changes and delays, as well as the departure of several key developers. Despite the delays, Resident Evil 4 went on to become one of the best-selling games of all time and is considered one of the greatest video games ever made.

While some delays can be beneficial and result in a better final product, others can cause immense frustration among fans (e.g., Duke Nukem Forever). In recent years we have seen more and more video games being announced well before they are actually ready for release, which can often lead to lengthy delays; something we have experienced with Beyond Good & Evil 2. So next time you get hyped for a new video game announcement, do not get your hopes too high - it might be several years before you actually get to play it!
