This week, Bungie held a big event to discuss the next chapter of Destiny 2. They showed off two big expansions, Edge of Fate and Renegades, as well as long-term plans that go all the way through 2026. The presentation is a big turning point for the franchise because it focuses on making the games easier to access, giving players more freedom, and doing a bold crossover with Star Wars.
Edge of Fate, the upcoming expansion, will come out on July 15, 2025. It will be the start of what Bungie calls the Fate Saga, a story arc that will last for years and include both new and old characters. The story will mostly be about a mysterious group called "The Nine." They are said to be ancient celestial beings that lived before the Traveler and are connected to different planets in the Sol system.
Edge of Fate takes place on a planetoid called Kepler, far away, and adds Dark Matter abilities and a Metroidvania-style gameplay structure. Players will get new ways to get around, such as Matter Spark, a power that turns Guardians into a rolling ball of electricity that looks a lot like Samus Aran's famous morph ball from Metroid. Matter Morph is another new ability that lets you change the environment, which adds puzzle elements to both combat and exploration.
Bungie has already released three free new dungeons, Explorer, Eternity, and Ultimatum, to prepare players for Edge of Fate. These are meant to give players a taste of the story and how the game works before the expansion comes out.
Bungie's decision to get rid of paywalls for seasonal content is one of the changes that will benefit players the most. From now on, players who buy a major expansion will be able to access all seasonal story content for no extra charge. People have been complaining for a long time that the game's story is broken up, and the content model is too expensive. This change fixes those problems.
The showcase also gave hints that Bungie is working to make Destiny 2 easier for new players to understand, who have long been put off by the game's complicated and story-heavy structure. A lot of emphasis was put on phrases like "play your way" and "player agency," which showed a shift in the design toward flexibility and ease of entry. Along with this, Bungie is adding new gear and making the popular shooting range a permanent part of the game.
Renegades, the next big expansion, will start on December 2, 2025, and was shown for the first time at the end of the event. Renegades will have weapons that look like lightsabers and a "space western" style, which are both direct influences from Star Wars. Bungie said that the expansion would look at Star Wars through a "Destiny lens," and the teaser trailer showed stylized space battles and movie-like visuals that paid homage to George Lucas's world.
In the years to come, two more expansions, Shattered Cycle and The Alchemist, are planned. Even though there aren't many details yet, Bungie said these will continue the main Fate Saga.
Bungie made it clear that Destiny 2 is still a top priority, even though the company is currently working on its next game, Marathon. Destiny 3 is not being worked on right now. Bungie, and by extension, Sony, seems set on improving the current platform instead of starting from scratch. They want to keep the community strong while also attracting new players.
By making these changes, Bungie is making Destiny 2 more stable in the long term, fixing mistakes from the past and building on what fans already love. It might be the most exciting time in years to join the fight, whether you used to be a Guardian but stopped or have never been inside the Tower.
