Chapter 11
Broken Family
Jorn work her up, shaking and moving her, screaming to get up. Alessandra sat up in her bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. When she managed to fully wake up she noticed it was still dark out, but also that fires where burning everywhere. She slides out of bed and looks a Jorn who’s franticly packing all of her things.
“Brother, what’s the problem?”
“I’ve no time to explain, help me get your things and let’s go.”
“No tell me now Jorn…”
“Allie there’s no time!”
“Tell me…”
“But… Fine I’ll tell you. About an hour ago I was in the lower area looking for the old library in hopes to find something to help us find Knight. While I was down there I heard a noise that seemed off. When I went to look it was a tunnel, and with that tunnel where rebels… In haste I sent a surge of condensed wind down in to the tunnel hopefully knocking them out. I was wrong, very wrong. Instead I started there invasion. The rebels are taking over the castle. It’s not safe we must flee. Even the workers have turned on us. I have Cole, and Sarwar gathering the men while I get you. We need to leave now.”
“But… what of my husband, have we any information on where he is? And what about his things? Shouldn’t we get them too?”
“I already have his stuff packed and with Sarwar. Let’s go sis.”
Alessandra pondered it for a bit, slightly nervous on if she should leave her home, let alone her child’s home. But the sounds of fighting and death seem to be urging her to go. She slides her hand along her bed trying to get one last feel before she leaves, and touches his sword. The cold steel sooths her as she straps it on. When she finally is ready to go, Jorn hands her a small silver bracer. The gilded silver etches a rose growing along it, and the flower blooming in to an empty socket. She pushes her arm through it and tightens it. It starts to throb, and the sword, its ruby, starts to shine.
“Brother what is this?”
“Living armor… Just like his.”
Without even thinking she removes the ruby from its home to its new one. The bracer starts to move. In a matter of seconds it grows covering her body in a crimson red armor, sleek and strong. Over the chest plate the ruby settles in the center of a blooming rose.
“Why is it red? I could have sworn your armor was to be white. Didn’t he give you a diamond?”
“What?”
“Knight, he should have given you a diamond that you where to place in that socket.”
“I have my wedding ring, but it’s small. This ruby is all I have. It turned gold before. But it changed back.”
“I see, then you’re meant for the red armor. Queen of the flames.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“It’s not important now, let’s go. You’ll be safe in that armor.”
They rush out of the room, Jorn carrying her bags. Behind them stood a ring of men protecting them, but the numbers that keep coming are slowly gaining sway. By the time the two of them are ten paces away those guards are overwhelmed, and now there after their ‘Queen’. Jorn lead the two of them, weaving and turning trying to avoid other rebels that are slaughtering guards. Left, right, right again, left once more. Just endless turns, heading lower and lower. Alessandra watches as the husbands of her closest friends are cut down. Her anger starts to grow and with each turn she sees more of it. They make another right and make it to the main hall.
They stand at the top of the steps looking down at the horde of rebels just endlessly pouring in from the doors. Jorn looks down clutching he bags. He looks to her and pauses. She senses his emotion… Her anger finally boils over. In her rage she removes the sword from its home, and grips as the blade pulses to her heart beat. As if something was guiding her she started walking. First slowly down the stairs, then in to a sprint. Soon she was at the bottom, and the rebels noticed her. All of them reverted there attack to her. Before one of them could get near her and implosion of fire impacts a group of rebels turning them to ash. Alessandra turns to see Jorn walking down, right hand cast out, charging a second blast.
It was now or never, she started to fight. She swung his sword, hitting an arm and removing it clean off, the spray of blood fueled the blade. It started to urge her swings, taking more blood and lives. In a matter of minutes she was at the far wall with Jorn only a few steps behind her. She jumped forward, cleaving a man in half, only to notice the door. In a mad dash she runs to it, swinging at all the swords flying at her. When she breaks past the horde she sees the courtyard. Full of bodies with only a few people standing. Cole was one of them. She ran to him and tripped on a body, causing her to stumble in to him.
“My Lady! Your covered in blood. What has been going on! It’s not safe here.”
“Cole, it’s you, dear lord it’s you, Jorn and I fought our way here.”
“Fought? With what… wait, isn’t that his blade?”
“It is, I woke with it.”
“But how did you remove it from its scabbard. None of us could.”
“I don’t know… Where’s Sarwar?”
“Outer gates, waiting for you, actually so where we, let’s go.”
She turns back to see Jorn running to them, the three of them run to the gates avoiding all the remaining rebels. Alessandra looks up at the gate walls to see them littered with archers, all aiming at them.
“Cole, what where you doing in the courtyard anyway?”
“Waiting for you.”
“But the rebels were right there, how did they not over whelm you?”
“That’s my elite squad of archers. There all aiming at me.”
“You mean near you.”
“No at me.”
“What?”
“Allie let me explain, Cole is gifted like the rest of us, he’s able to control the winds around him to increase the speed of his arrows. His men all aim at him so he can redirect the shots in to his targets.”
“And that’s why Knight wanted me to be your personal guard. Funny, he knows of my skill but never met me until that day…”
They make it to the larger gilded doors, and stop looking to see if there where anyone around that might stop ambush them. Once it was clear Cole sends the command to open the gate. Slowly the Gates swing open, allowing the three of them to leave the castle. Alessandra looks back at the building, all the smoke and fire bellowing out of it. All the men dying and wives crying. She returns the sword home, clicking it in to place. She turns and walks with the other two, to join the wall of men standing that the ready. There are only forty of them. Sarwar stands to the side, looking over the pass. When she gets close to him he doesn’t move. When she looks she sees the massive army of blue, the ocean, marching to them.
“The enemy invades and castle in rebellion.”
“They’ll be slaughtered.”
“Its revenge for what they did to our men. These forty are all that remain. They refuse to leave. It’ll only be us four leaving.”
“Where to?”
“To the north east, heading to the mountains.”
“Is it safe?”
“Yes.”
She looks back to the castle, then to Sarwar. She starts to cry when she notices that he’s already crying. Jorn step closer to her, trying to comfort her. She just rips herself away. He pauses and steps back as she collapses on the floor in tears. Sarwar looks away, Jorn waits and watches. Cole, Cole walks up to the ridge and looks off in to distance. Squinting, trying to see ahead of him.
“Is that… a person? Walking toward us?”
