Chapter 4:

Burdan of my gift

I stand at the main entrance, while the sun starts to set softly in the light. My armor, black as night it’s self other then the slight bit of gold gilding within the detailed parts, shines on reflecting every source of light that happens to lie upon it. My cape, bellowing triumphantly, licks the end of my sword. I turn to see behind me, where King Sarwar is conferencing with the generals. He turns and smiles are me hinting that everything is as planned. He’s telling them that I’m heading to an underground channel to get us to another city to form an attack. If they only knew what we were truly up too… I look to my right arm where my helm rests. The twisted metal hiding my face allowing only my eyes to be seen looks back at me, longing for the taste of battle. A soft hand lays rest on my arm, when I turn to look it’s a child, a young one only 9 maybe 10 years of age. I smile at him and he returns it.

“My mommy said you’re the man who is protecting us.” He whispers softly at me.

“I am him.” I bend down to look in to his eyes. “Who are you?”

“I’m Seth. I help the stable person take care of the horseys.”

“Nice to meet you, now run along before you get in trouble with your mother.”

“I already am.”

“Why?”

“My mommy doesn’t like you. She says that you’re the reason… the reason daddy isn’t home right now.”

“Who’s your father?”

“Richard.”

The moment the boy says that name a cold sweat forms on my back. How didn’t I notice it? This is Richard’s son. His flesh and blood, the one link he has to this world. I force myself to smile as the little boy starts to walk away. My mommy doesn’t like you. Those words start to bounce in my head. Is this really the same Richard?

“Dear heavens help us.”

“Help us indeed. Are you ready to go Lord Knight?” Sarwar’s voice sounds off to me.

“I am, they take the story?”

“Yea, there a little confused on why we need another city to “help us” but they don’t question us.”

“I see. Well ready to go?”

“Yea just let me go get out horses.” He turns to walk off as my arm stops him.

“You should have learned by now.”

“I know, I was just hoping we could this time. I hate walking.”

“Its better that way, now come, we need to be off.” I start to walk to the gate and I stop at it. I look back at the castle, to the 3rd window on the 8th floor, where the little light still flickers as my sight fogs in the fading light. This is where I made that promise, the one that I’ll never break, because I made it to my heart and soul at the same time, for her.

“I’ll return my love, and then we can have what the gods wouldn’t allow us to have.”

With that, the two of us walk in to the sunset, my helm now on, turning me in to Lord Knight, the most ruthless gifted swordsmen, and most heartless killer.

Three hours later…

“Knight there they are, it looks like the main camp. I’m not sure what the code is to the camp ranks but they over took our smaller city.”

“How many civilians are there?”

“The towns full of them, looks as if they have their freedom of the land, but the enemy is stationed there.”

“Do you think it’ll be possible to evacuate them all, at least before our assault?

“Not without the enemy noticing them leaving… This town is seven thousand strong. Not counting the militia.”

“Damn it, damn it all to hell. So you’re telling me that I need to pick out the targets?”

“Yes, each shot has to be surefire hit; I won’t be able to shield everyone at once.”

“I’ve not enough time to practice.”

“Just don’t kill any civs.”

“I’ll try not to.”

I stand up from our hidden spot in the brush. Sarwar can only see me by the white from my eyes. I step ahead as the leaves from the bushes touch my armor, leaving small trails of dew all along the length of my legs. I move ever so swiftly now that I’m out of the bush. I head to the town, pressing tight to the outer walls. I watch as Sarwar is opposite side. I knock softly to attract the guards in to the shadows. They both foolishly walk over to where I am, giving Sarwar the time to scale the wall and get on to the roof. He leans on the edge, looking down; trying to pick out each person and tagging them, with a small trace of his gift. This, allowing me to see who’s a target and who’s not, leaves a scent. I close my eyes as the guards walk to the noise I made. They can’t see me. The one is so close I can smell the weak aroma of scotch on his breath, and the odor of sweat cover steel. They start to head back to the gate, as I open my eyes and watch. Once they position themselves I move, scaling the wall with my gift, cutting off all sound.

Once over I drop down in to an alley, no lights, hidden in the darkness. I swiftly move, making no sound and dodging all innocent bystanders. I stop at an intersection, where two enemies stumble out of a bar. There drunken babble hides the sounds around. They walk in the she shadows, coming to me. Their dark blue armor collects the little light in the dark alley and projects it making a soft glow around them. Two drunken idiots stumbling to me, stumbling to their deaths, the first ones in a long bloody night. The one stops and turns to relieve himself. Step forward and make enough sound to catch their attention. He stops and looks in to the dark, my eyes closed. The other draws his dagger and looks in to the dark. I step again, and open my eyes. They both jump in shock, but before a sound can me made I have my hands on both of them. Their bodies drop to the floor as I turn the spark of their life off. I loud clank sounds as they hit the ground. Within second hundreds of men start to pour out of the bars, inns, and lady houses, almost all of them wearing the blue armor. They all look in to the shadows, as I light a small flame in my up turned palm.

“Hi, I’m Lord Knight.” One bold man of the group, who seems to have had one too many, shouts to me.

“What do yous wants? Are yous heres for a fights? Cus I’ll giveses you a fights to remembers”

“Again, I’m Lord Knight, here to kill all of you blue armored men.” They all erupt in to a roar of laughter. I listen to each of their distinct laughs, some rough, others near snickers, all of them fueling my rage. My left hand squeezes my sword, waiting watch.

“Hear that guys, he thinks he can kill us. The Sapphire Guardians, he thinks he can kill us. Let’s…” He’s cut off as a blast of black lightning screams soaring from my finger tips. It impacts him on the chest, then nothing. He’s gone, not trace left. The other men look at the empty void of a man, and then draw weapons. With a roar they come running at me. I laugh as I turn and run. The chase starts.

In a matter of minutes I manage to gather most of the men to the town’s fountain. Over two hundred men all stand around me, weapons at hand, more gathering with each passing second. I whip my arms out as I send focused bursts of fire at them one at a time, taking them out as they charge at me. Scream after scream, attack after attack, they slowly start to drop. Dying faster than my men where during the siege they did to us. After the 28th person I turned to fire to find him only four feet from me. I quick blast and he’s done, but right after that successful attack I get tackled from behind. The wind rushes out of me as I slam in to the cold hard dirt road. Two, then six, then eighteen, now forty-six, man after man jumping on time of me. I try over and over to get up, to escape the piling. But I’m pinned down. Sarwar watch’s from the roof, still trying to protect the civilians within the area. I try and try to get them off. Nothing but more pain. I manage to lift up a foot, big mistake. The take this chance to strike me in the chest stealing the little breath I had. Now I lay there with more and more men adding to the crushing weight above me. I try as hard as I can to get a breath, but I can’t. It’s as if I’m drowning. I slowly start to lose my grip conciseness. Before I black out, my grip in my gift slips. The pile of men starts to shake as small whips of chaos burst out from between them. In a massive effort there all blow away. I stand there, eyes covered in a dark aura. A long grin spreads as I laugh manically.

She quickly sits up in her bed, ignoring the pang in her shoulder. Her body covered in s cold sweat. The nurse rushes in.

“My lady you must rest.”

“WHERE IS OUR LORD?”

“He’s out, and safe.”

“NO, I NEED TO KNOW.”

“Sleep, please my lady you need rest.”

“OUR LORD HAS LOST CONTROL. I need to get to him…”

“You’re going nowhere; our Lord gave blunt orders that you are not to leave this room until he deems it.” She gives up as the nurse forces her to lie back down.

After the laughter stop, I snap my head back as black whips of god knows what explode from me. They start to hit person after person, bodies start to drop dead as the chaos kills them each on at a time. Shields put for protection, not shatter from the sheer force and magnitude of the attack. In seconds the clouds of dust settle and nothing stands. The dark aura leaves and I regain control. I look around as Sarwar comes running.

“KNIGHT! WHAT DID YOU DO?” I stand there trembling, eyes widening, as he meets up to me. “Knight, what happened? Why would you do this?”

“Sarwar, what have I done.” My voice starts to crack as tears form under my helm. “I killed them, I killed everyone. There are even children in there…” I collapse to the floor, as Sarwar gets a horse so as to take us home. He struggles to get me in to the wagon. The once in, he blasts off, leaving a town, now literally a ghost town.
