Chapter 5:

Hidden truths

The cart hits a bump in the roar. Two of the three horses that we had to pull the cart are dead. We over used them. At least that’s what Sarwar said when I woke up. It’s funny; I woke up in my castle, in my bed, alone. Sarwar said that I’ve been asleep for the past month, and I guess it must be true; I was clean shaven the night we went to that town. That bump, I’m using it as an explanation for my “coma” but I know it was because of my gift. My gift, more of a burden then a gift really, it always takes more than it gives. I’ve saved lives, but for everyone I save, I tend to kill tenfold more. Pity, it’s a rather powerful gift; sadly I’ve never mastered it. No that’s a lie, I have mastered my gift, but I’m so out of practice, it just sort of stopped listening… Richard always said it would change the long it’s sealed. But then again I never had any idea that I would reunite with my gift.

I’ve gotten rather bored, I mean since I woke up it apparently can’t stand up. It’s not that I don’t want to it’s that I can’t. Sarwar sealed me to the bed, and I fear to tap in to my gift to break the seal. I bet you noticed two things. First, I’m talking to you the reader, yea hello there! And second, I’m not traumatized by those events the other night. Well my coma was a dream filled one. That night, over and over, worse and worse, and in that short month I went insane, so insane that I became sane, very sane. But enough of that, it’s best I wake up now, I dosed off due to Sarwar’s spell. Maybe things will get better. Wish me luck!!

“Knight…. Lord…. Lord Knight….” A soft fog covers my eyes as I open them slowly.

“Is it really necessary to shine that blasted light in my eyes while I sleep? If you hadn’t educed it would never have gone to sleep.”

“Nice to have you back Knight.”

“Enough small talk, where is she, you promised I could see her if I slept. Where is she?”

“No, I’m sorry Brother, but I can’t let you see her.”

“Sarwar let me see her.”

“No…”

“Why? I command it, allow me to see her.”

“No, for once it’s better that you don’t see her.”

“What happened, where is she?” For some reason I was calm.

“Knight NO, STOP ASKING.”

“I WANT TO SEE HER.” I feel a spell come over me and my mouth is quieted.

“Knight it’s for the better. I know you want to see her but I don’t think you can handle the shock. And I know what you’re thinking, I know you well. I know you’ve the power to dissolve my seals on your body, but I know you don’t want to touch it right now. Now I’m going to remove the seal on your mouth, stop asking.” With a snap the seal leaves and I feel the access to my words.

“Thank you, Sarwar, tell me the news.”

“No.”

“Fine, I’ll do this my way.” I grab my sword that is still on my hip. Its spell won’t allow anyone but me to touch it, at least only me and my hearts connection. My swords not a normal one, it has the skill to seal off my anger. The madder I get the worse the cut, hence the rather, calm and or quiet actions. But it’s also able to cut spells. No one knows about that, which is way my teachers couldn’t really ever seal me in my room. Yea I’ve had this sword for a long time.

I slide the cold steel out of the sheath. The soft echo of its release sounds in to the room, ringing. The rage that has been gathered within the blade flows in to me. I allow the magick to flow in; it licks at my muscles, teasing to be used. I lay it next to me and with a twist of my wrist the blade moves only half a centimeter from me. The seal shatters before the blade can even touch it, such a weak seal. He really knew I was too scared to tap in to my gift. I watch as Sarwar’s eyes widen in disbelief as I start to stand up. I return my sword to its home, listening for the click, as if locking the door, locking the rage.

“Where is she?”

“How… but…. Her bedroom, I’m sorry Brother; I won’t question your word… You are as skilled as they say.”

“Thank you, I’ll be off.”

Sarwar walked off to the side, still confused on how no magick was used, yet the seal broke. He whispers, “That sword” to himself as he walks off. I calmly walked to her room. Thinking back I’ve only been in there once before, the night I met her.

I remember it well. It was six years ago, before my castle was a castle, you see my castle used to be a house, but in the years we built to it, so yea… Castle. I was wondering the house, looking for this girl’s bird; I had flown in while I was leaving to go to business. I promised I’d find it so I went looking. At the time my house had 50 bedrooms. I walked the halls looking, and when I found it was sitting on a door knob. I went to catch it, but my head slammed in to the door as it flew away, the door wasn’t locked. I stumbled in and fell at the foot of her bed. She was just sitting there, in a light blue dress, looking at me with her legs crossed, allowing her figure to be hidden yet seen at the same time. She sat there just looking at me, as if she knew I was coming. I listened to her angelic words as she spoke.

“I don’t know who you are but get out! I’m getting ready to meet our lord and I don’t need a simple boy distracting me.”

“You’re going to meet our lord?”

“Are you deaf? That’s what I said.”

“You mean your lord, not mine.”

“If you live here, he’s your lord, you can’t change that.”

“I can.”

“You can’t, the only way he’s not your lord is if you’re King Sarwar or your our lord himself. I know King Sarwar, you are not him. You can’t be out lord, not dressed like that.”

“See that’s where you’re wrong.”

“Wrong? Lord Ricardo is a magnificent man that has the power to crush thousands in one blow. I’m to be his bride; at least I want to be. I’m his age, and I really like everything about him.”

“His bride, daft that’s what this meeting was about…”

“What?”

“Nothing. How old are you? You look only 15.”

“I’m 16 thank you very much, same age as our lord.”

“Fine fine, now tell me, why do you like him? Is it the power, money, sex appeal?”

“Well he is handsome. But I love him for him. He saved my mother and father during the war two months ago. I’m grateful. Everything I learned about him I love, and the more I learned about him the harder I fell in love with him. I love him so much.” I sat on the floor, hiding my sword from her, trying to hear her words about me before she notices I’m her lord.

“I love it all. The way he smiles at the end of his speeches, or how he actually looks us all in the eyes when talking like that. How he’s waiting for his true love to come. That’s why where meeting him.”

“We?”

“Me and the other nine girls Sarwar picked. ‘Your lord needs to marry to keep the hopes of his army.’ That’s what Sarwar said. I hope I get to have him, I love him.”

“Always trying to make me look good…. Tell me more of your lord.”

“OUR lord.”

“Fine… ‘Our’ lord.”

“Gladly. You see, he has a touch so lovely that I melt just as he passes and takes all our hands. He’s such a gentleman. He’s perfect.”

“No man is perfect. Trust me.”

“He is perfect; now get out your wasting time. I’ll have none of your talk against my husband to be.”

“Ok as you wish, but you might want to kiss me before I leave.”

“WHAT! WHY WOULD I DO THAT?”

“Because….” I stand up and start to walk out; I stop at the door and flash my sword. “I’m the lord you’re in love with…. And I think I love you.” I walked out smiling as she started to scream that she was an idiot.

It was fun, six years ago. I turned the corner and stood at the door. I felt the doorknob with my hand and the slight dent from my head so long ago. I turned the knob and walked in, closing it behind me. I looked in to the room, where she sat in a chair looking out the window; her hands in her lap, smiling.

“Ricardo, you’re awake. It’s nice to see you.” She sits looking out the window, her back to me.

“Why is it every time that there’s news, something serious, or passion, your backs to me?”

“I was just thinking that too… Sarwar told you?”

“No nothing, wouldn’t tell me a thing.”

“Good, I want to tell you. Your mortal now, so you need to be careful, so shock can kill you… even when weak like you are, or where.”

“I know, now tell me what is it?” She stands up with her back to me.

“Close your eyes.” I do so and she walks over to me, I feel her hands touch my face. The soft touch of hers that I melt to, she presses her cheek to mine, then turns as her lips press to mine. I feel the soft longing kiss start to get intense. She presses harder then pulls back. I open my eyes to see her eyes, those gems, shining brighter than ever, and her skin glowing brighter than ever. I whisper I love you to her as I kiss her again. She parts from my lips again and smiles at me. I finally find my hands to her waist, but something feels off. She looks down then back at me with a smile. I look at her with puzzled eyes.

“Alessandra, what is it?”’

“Ricardo, I’m pregnant.”

“Oh…” I kiss her again then walk to her bed where I sit down. A smile spreads across my face as I utter these words, “Finally” as I fall back on to the bed in joy, shock, and bliss.
