Citadel Studios accounced a new Kickstarter campaign yesterday for the upcoming online sandbox game, Shards Online, which as been in development since 2013.
Citadel Studios, formed independently by industry veterans, have set a goal of $50,000 to be raised through kickstarter.com to assist them in implementing the final toches for the alpha release. People who pledge $20 or more will acquire the full game when it launches on steam, while people who pledge $40 or more will receive full access to the alpha, which is set to be released early next year.
Other deals that are available include access to the pre-alpha program for admins, becoming a playtester, as well as deals involving merchandise. The Washington-based studio promises to match each donation dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000, which means they could potentially have upwards of $100,000 for devloping this game.
Admist chaos between conflicting gods and demigods, Shards Online allows players to explore a vast array of player-run worlds, seeking their treasures and learning their histories. Each 'Shard' has its own sets of mechanics and rules, making each 'Shard' different from the next.
The pre-alpha of the game enjoyed much success, as it was declared MMORPG's Top Indie MMO of PAX East 2014, and the developers have received much praise for their work. "Citadel Studios knows what they're doing, and they're the right team to give the sandbox genre what it's been sorely missing," said Rob Denton, co-creator of Dark Age Camelot and Warhammer Online.
