Heat weapons—often called blasters—arrive as one of the most exciting Legendary options in Destiny 2 with the Renegades expansion.

These Star-Wars-inspired guns use a unique heating and cooling system with special reload windows and perks. When you handle the temperature gauge well, you gain more power than other Legendary weapons can offer.

This guide shows you how to acquire blasters and use their mechanics to your advantage, so you output steady damage, chain reload perks, and keep firing with minimal downtime.

How To Get Blasters In Renegades

You need the Renegades expansion to start. Blasters drop throughout the new content. You earn them while progressing through the campaign, running the Lawless Frontier, and purchasing gear at the Tharsus Outpost.

More models are also set to appear in the new Equilibrium dungeon, which launches on Saturday, December 13. Keep these sources in mind as you farm your loadout.

The Two Heat Weapon Archetypes

Heat weapons come in two archetypes. A Balanced Heat Weapon and a Dynamic Heat Weapon behave differently, especially around their perfect reloads.

Both types let you hit a perfect reload window that rewards precise timing. Learn where that timing lives in the UI and you keep your heat in check while maximizing DPS.

Reading The Perfect Reload: Hip-Fire And ADS Cues

When hip-firing a Balanced Heat Weapon like the Fast Talker, watch the heat notch on the reticle. As you shoot and heat rises toward the cap, you see a small marker.

If you hit reload right as the pointer reaches that notch, you trigger a quick vent animation—your perfect reload—so you get back to firing sooner.

Aiming down sights adds more cues. The Fast Talker shows a heat bar in the sight. Red builds as you fire. When the bar crosses the small lines, you are in the perfect reload window. Use those lines to time the vent while ADS.

Dynamic Heat Weapons: A Different Perfect

Dynamic Heat Weapons signal the window in a different way. You still see the notch in hip-fire for general overheat timing, but while aiming down sights you may see dots that grow brighter and start blinking near the threshold.

The perfect reload is not at the last moment before overheat. Instead, you hit reload near the bottom of the reload animation—right where you see a little ledge.

Nailing this grants several seconds of massively reduced heat buildup. That means you effectively gain an extended-mag effect and can fire far longer before overheating.

Heat Dissipates Over Time—Even While Stowed

Heat drops if you simply stop firing. It falls from the 70s to the 40s and down with time. Most importantly, heat continues cooling while the gun is stowed.

That gives every heat weapon a low-key Autoloading Holster effect. You can build heat on one blaster, swap, fight on the other, and when you return, the first has already cooled.

This is powerful with a second heat weapon like the Univil Discourse (a Dynamic Heat Weapon). Raise its heat, swap to Fast Talker, and fire. When you swap back, Univil Discourse has cooled dramatically.

You can bounce between two blasters and keep your weapons in the optimal temperature zone for longer engagements. Heat does accumulate faster than it dissipates, so you eventually need to vent, but careful swapping extends your damage windows.

Vent Whenever You Want—Then Cancel To Shoot

You do not need to wait for the perfect moment. Venting early is strong. If you drop a target quickly, tap reload and return to zero heat.

This matters even more for Dynamic Heat Weapons, where the perfect window is at the bottom of the animation. You can fire a burst, immediately vent, and hit the perfect timing over and over.

You can also cancel the vent at any time. Start venting and if a new threat appears, interrupt the animation and resume firing instantly. This freedom lets you maintain pressure in PvE or react fast in PvP without getting stuck in reloads.

Abuse Reload-Triggered Perks

Venting counts as a reload. The instant you tap vent, reload-based perks trigger. Kill Clip is a prime example. Get a defeat, hit vent for a split second, cancel, and you are already buffed. That is about as fast as reload synergy gets.

The same applies to other reload-tied perks like Heal Clip on certain dungeon weapons. Because you can repeatedly hit short vents, you keep burst windows active more often than with traditional magazines.

There is also an advanced technique on Dynamic Heat Weapons. If you reach the threshold for a perfect reload, beginning to fire again can grant the Dynamic Heat Limiter effect even if you do not press reload.

You still receive the benefit as you continue shooting, which keeps damage flowing and your heat manageable. Use this with Kill Clip cycling to keep damage perks active almost constantly.

Balanced Heat Weapons: Lean Into Cooling And Efficiency

Balanced models such as the M17 Fast Talker shine with heat mitigation. With blasters there is technically no magazine in the traditional sense, so mods and stats that control temperature effectively increase how long you fire before you must vent.

Cooling Efficiency as a Masterwork extends the firing window. The Enhanced Heat Generated weapon mod further slows heat buildup. Combined, you go much longer between reloads.

The new perk Cooling Baubles creates spikes of relief. Picking up an elemental pickup or an Orb of Power instantly cuts a noticeable chunk of heat.

You can force this by pairing with an Attrition Orbs grenade launcher to spawn orbs, or by running builds like Striker with Touch of Thunder and Pulse Grenades to generate Ionic Traces. Each pickup shaves heat, letting you sustain damage strings without hitting overheat.

Premasterworked Blasters And Origin Trait Synergy

Special “premasterworked” versions of blasters add a second origin trait. Every blaster ships with Air Cooled Core: sprinting increases vent or reload speed at low heat or full magazine, and you gain handling and movement speed while aiming down sights. You will notice faster venting after a quick sprint, especially when your heat gauge is low.

Premasterworked drops add Accelerated Assault. Sustained damage loads slightly more ammo from reserves—or, in blaster terms, removes more heat—and increases damage. The effect is clear even on a short test.

With only Air Cooled Core, you reach overheat at a normal pace. Switch to Accelerated Assault, hold on target, and you watch the weapon cool more aggressively mid-string while gaining extra damage.

On a weapon like Compact Defender, you can see the trigger point where heat dips and damage ramps as you keep pressure on a boss or elite.

Things get wild when you chain a perfect reload with Accelerated Assault. You already extended your firing window by vent timing, and now sustained hits kick off repeated mini-cooldowns. Your “magazine” effectively stretches again and again.

For Balanced Heat Weapons—especially Fast Talker—Accelerated Assault stands out as the superior origin trait on a premasterworked drop. It lowers heat as you shoot, extends your firing time, and increases damage at once.

Practical Combat Flow

In practice, you flow through fights like this. Open on a priority target with Fast Talker, watching the ADS heat lines for the perfect vent. If adds rush you mid-vent, cancel and gun them down, then vent again.

When heat gets high, swap to Univil Discourse to let Fast Talker cool in the holster. Generate orbs through your subclass or a support-weapon like Attrition Orbs.

Scoop them up to cut heat with Cooling Baubles and return to your blaster with low temperature. On any defeat, tap vent to trigger Kill Clip, cancel, and push into the next target with buffed damage.

If you run a Dynamic Heat Weapon, practice the bottom-of-animation timing. Fire, tap reload at the ledge, enjoy several seconds of reduced heat, and keep the cycle going.

If you hit the threshold while aiming, resume firing to get the Dynamic Heat Limiter effect even without pressing reload. This keeps you mobile and aggressive while still exploiting the system.

Why Blasters Are So Strong

Blasters pack tiny advantages that snowball. You can reload whenever you like, or skip it entirely and keep firing. You can cancel mid-vent to respond instantly. You can stow a blaster and let it cool passively while fighting with another weapon.

You can trigger reload perks almost instantly to boost damage or survivability. Then you layer in Air Cooled Core movement and handling bumps, Accelerated Assault for sustained damage and heat reduction, and heat-cutting interactions from orbs and elemental pickups.

The result is a weapon class that stays online longer, hits harder during short windows, and recovers faster between engagements.

Final Tips To Maximize Heat Weapons

Keep your eyes on the UI cues for perfect reloads in both hip-fire and ADS. Vent early and often when a threat dies. Cancel vents whenever danger appears. Rotate two blasters to exploit passive cooling.

Build around heat reduction with Cooling Efficiency, Enhanced Heat Generated, and Cooling Baubles. Prioritize premasterworked drops with Accelerated Assault for bosses and long damage phases.

With these habits, you maintain uptime, avoid costly overheat lockouts, and turn every fight into a controlled burn where you decide when to vent and when to unleash.
