Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below - NYCC

Even without any knowledge of the franchise or what the story curtails I’m excited to pick this game up when it releases

Perhaps the most surprising game at NYCC was Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below. I had no interest in playing this game but was convinced by the one of the marketing staff to give it a try. After completing the tutorial stage I immediately fell in love with the game.

Combat is fluid and quick, resembling the battle system from Kingdom Hearts. Characters travel on a 3D environment and take on various challenging enemies using an array of magical abilities and physical attacks. Switching between characters is executed with a press of a button and attacks are easily accessed using the simple interface. While the first stage simply demonstrates the basic controls of the combat system it’s the boss battle against the Gigantes that truly test your skills.

In this fight players must defeat the Gigantes in 10 minutes. Taking down this massive beast requires careful planning, requiring players to manage the use of mounted Spellcasters, managing addition forces, hitting critical weak points and finally avoiding damage. It’s a good thing that the game allows for both automatic and manual commands, allowing players to choose their own playstyle.

immediately after defeating the Gigantes after the first attempt I was sold. Dragon Quest Heroes offers an excellent active combat system and fantastic enemies. Even without any knowledge of the franchise or what the story curtails I’m excited to pick this game up when it releases on PlayStation 4 on October 13.
