Marvel’s Wolverine finally gained some attention again after almost five years of waiting. The last State of Play session featured extensive gameplay. The action-adventure game was first revealed in 2021 alongside Spider-Man 2, and is one of the most anticipated games from Insomniac Games. It got its most in-depth showing yet, with a clearer look at its fighting systems, story, characters, and release plans.
Marvel fans have been dying to see Logan return, and the new gameplay presentation showed why. Insomniac’s Spider-Man movies are one thing, but Marvel’s Wolverine seems to be heading in a very different direction, with everything from vicious fighting and theatrical set pieces to story-driven moments. Spider-Man was all about fast heroics and colorful spectacles.

Wolverine himself is a darker and more mature figure whose identity is grounded in violence, survival, and the difficulties mutants face.
Reports also confirmed pre-orders are underway. The Standard Edition is $69.99, and the Digital Deluxe Edition is $79.99. Most crucially to many players, Insomniac and PlayStation have opted to deny any early-access bonuses. That means everyone will be able to play the game when it launches on September 15, 2026. From the moment the gameplay video starts, it’s evident that Marvel’s Wolverine is going to be a lot more dramatic experience than anything else Insomniac has created yet.
There is blood all over the environments, foes are brutally damaged, and the iconic claws of Logan are presented in a way that makes sense, given the fact that the character comes from comic books. The game's developers call it a brutal, action-packed single-player experience centered on James "Logan" Howlett, and the trailer backs this up.
Every slice and stab and kill has significance, and helps give Wolverine a different personality from the studio’s other superhero games. But beyond the action, the extended gameplay peek told us a lot about the tale. The plot follows Logan’s pursuit of a group of mutants that disappeared after being kidnapped by the Reavers, a lethal cybernetic mercenary organization.
The job of the heavily armed hunters is to deliver caught mutants to Bolivar Trask, the wealthy industrialist who is notorious throughout Marvel fiction for his anti-mutant convictions and opinion that humans are superior to mutants. The discovery doesn't do the world's mutants any favors. Instead of living openly, many are driven into hiding, always in fear of detection or persecution.
Most people in society are unaware of their difficulties, creating an environment of loneliness and helplessness that seems to fuel much of the game's story. One of the most important characters to be revealed was Jean Grey, who plays a major role in the gameplay. The powerful telekinetic mutant becomes a friend and guide to the remaining mutants.
She faces many threats and little aid, so she teams up with Logan to save others who have been seized. There's also the narrative of Team X, a group of mutants considered to be the last hope for mutant survival. Logan left the organization three years before the game's events, but he returns when things go downhill.

The story, which centers around mutant abuse, survival, and resistance, sounds like Marvel’s Wolverine might have a deeper emotional story than many fans first expected.
Combat seems to be one of the better features of Marvel's Wolverine. In the gameplay showing, Logan fights off numerous Reaver patrols using powerful weapons, cybernetic upgrades, and cutting-edge technologies. Wolverine is not simply an in-your-face fighter; he can sneak up on his adversaries, ambush them from above, and kill with a deadly punch at close range. The fighting system consists of a set of unique skills, called Techniques.
hey showed two: Tornado Spin and Bull Rush. Both were designed to allow Logan to clear groups of foes rapidly. These skills cranked up Wolverine’s ferocious fighting style, adding an extra dimension of meaning to battle. Jean Grey also lends a hand in the fight. With her telekinetic powers, she can throw objects, immobilize enemies, and open things up for Wolverine.
These support elements seem to encourage the two characters to team up on attack, which can lead to dramatic takedowns and destructive combos. One feature that stands out is the incorporation of spectacular finishing maneuvers. These savage executions, which can be done solo or with company, were some of the most violent portions of the presentation.
Every strike, good parry, and enemy killed increases Logan’s fury meter. The angrier Wolverine becomes, the more powerful he can be, and his legendary healing factor means he is more likely to survive. The repairing method itself seems to include many little nuances. In the combat sequences, Logan is gravely damaged enough that most individuals would not be able to move.
As the players keep fighting, you can see limbs, flesh, and bone regenerating. This is one of Wolverine’s most impressive skills. Rage Tier Three was perhaps the most eye-catching exhibit. The game’s pumped up to the max, and it’s a stylized, monochrome frenzy inspired by Marvel’s popular Black, White and Blood comic book. The scene makes Wolverine all the more threatening, and it provides a visual extravaganza unlike anything else in Insomniac’s games.
The demo gameplay also had more than the traditional combat.
One of the larger set pieces is Wolverine racing down a highway on a motorbike chasing bad men. Players can chop off tires of moving cars, jump between moving targets, and fling foes from driving trucks in this scene. That chase perfectly exemplifies what Insomniac is all about: crafting movies you get to play. It mixes action and story into giant moments that feel like they’re from a big movie.

They are supposed to be key highlights of the campaign, a balance between heavy fighting sequences and story exploration sections. The studio also highlighted its commitment to becoming accessible. Like earlier Insomniac games, Marvel’s Wolverine will include a ton of features to make it easier for people with cognitive, auditory, visual, and movement challenges to play.
This approach has become a hallmark of the studio’s development philosophy. This means that more individuals can enjoy the game regardless of their needs. Insomniac also revealed when the game will be available, and the benefits customers would receive if they pre-order it. Pre-ordering the physical or digital version of Marvel’s Wolverine will give you goodies including Reflective Claws, one Technique Point, and four PlayStation Network-only characters. Digital Deluxe Edition ($79.99) – Comes with more cosmetic content and benefits to game progress.
The outfits are divided into five categories: Incredible Savage, Age of Apocalypse, Night Hunt, New Leather, and one premium costume yet to be fully revealed.
Players will also receive claws of five different types: Smooth Edge Claws, Hollow Blade Claws, Thick Claws, Serrated Spine Claws, and Tapered Claws. Owners of the Deluxe Edition additionally gain three Technique Points, which let players unlock abilities a little faster in the early sections of the game.
The bonuses seem to be mainly cosmetic, even though there is some extra content, so those who buy the normal version won’t be missing out on any big gameplay features. The Deluxe Edition is an optional extra. Many of the personalization options are already unlockable by playing the game. More characters and surprises on the way.”While the gameplay reveal showed us a lot of new things, Insomniac made it clear that there are still plenty of surprises to come.
The video offered a sneak peek at some new characters, opposing factions, and upcoming story twists. One of the most obvious guests appears to be Sabretooth, Wolverine’s longtime nemesis and one of Marvel’s most famous villains. It’s still a mystery what his involvement will be following the quick teaser, but fans are excited to watch how Insomniac handles the iconic rivalry.
The designers also hinted at larger conflicts, more mutant characters, and more story disclosures that will be made public in the months leading up to the game’s release. So the latest showcase may just be showing a snippet of what the entire game can achieve.

Since its original announcement in 2021, the project has been one of the most discussed upcoming releases on the site. For many fans, the debut trailer for the game was a promise from Sony and Insomniac to build on the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man with another large character game.
After years of waiting, the extended gameplay presentation is the best evidence yet that the studio may be working on another big game.
There were some misgivings due to the long production process and lack of information, but it seems the new footage has given people much more confidence in the idea. With its strong action, sophisticated themes, cinematic style and recognizable Marvel characters, the game is projected to be one of the top hits of 2026.
Insomniac Games is one of PlayStation’s most consistent first-party studios, and has produced a ton of technically remarkable and financially successful titles throughout this generation. If Marvel's Wolverine is as good as it seemed in its latest demo presentation, then it could be one of the best PS5 games ever.
With a September 15 launch date, fans finally have a concrete target to aim for. People have waited years for Wolverine to have his big moment, and if what we’ve seen so far is any indication, it may have been well worth the wait.
