Today at the Microsoft E3 press conference new information and a demo was released for Lara Croft’s latest adventure. Instead of looking forward this new installment in the Tomb Raider franchise will be based on Lara’s origin and focus on combat, survival, and intense action. The demo showcased Lara’s incredible acrobatic skills, combat abilities, and endurance in spectacular ways.
Showing a stunning action pack sequence of the game Tomb Raider is shaping up to becoming a marvelous title. Right from the start Lara uses her Bow and Arrow to eliminate three guards, one was silently killed and the other with an arrow through the head. The final enemy immediately took cover by turning over a table and attempting to shoot Lara, only to be pushed off the cliff. Scavenging weapons Lara quickly zip-lines to the next area and uses her new shotgun to blast open the wooden door.
With only a small time to recovery Lara receives a transmission from her missing friend Sam and reassures her that she is coming. Quickly moving down the mountain, showing off the immense agility and speed of Lara Croft, she lands on the roof of a house that collapses causing her to nearly fall off the cliff unless the player quickly presses X. she finds two enemies who just stuck oil. Lighting the tip of her arrow she inflames one of the targets and quickly eliminates the other, but now the alert has been sounded. Using the environment to her advantage Lara immediate sets fire to two more targets using the same technique and shoots down some barrels, using scavenged shotgun, before leaping onto a high platform and killing the targets below. One enemy attempts to climb up and gets a stomach filled with lead, his partner below is stuck twice before Lara comes in close and sticks an arrow into his jaw.
With the enemies gone Lara attempts to cross a raging river only to be overwhelmed and swept down river. After falling from the first fall Lara quickley recovers and shoots down all debris, in slow motion, in her way before landing onto a fallen plane. Landing on the cockpit glass, which is cracking, she attempts to grab a convenient parachute. While falling she screams for her life and opens the first parachute, it fails but the second one doesn’t. Attempting to navigate through the trees, hitting a bunch on the way, Lara’s parachute straps rip and she fails. Severely injured Lara finds her near a makeshift village ending the demo.
Throughout the demo you’ll notice a lot of elements from experience points to intense action. Lara is quick and deadly, without any remorse she eliminates each enemy with precision by using any advantage possible. Quick time events are scattered throughout the demo that require the player to imput commands, quickly navigate through an expected event, or finish off an enemy. Lara is also quick, capable, and can withstand an immense amount of pain. During the end of the demo Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio of Crystal Dynamics, explained how Tomb Raider will be use “survival action, brutal combat, and dynamic exploration will this origin story truly unique and unforgettable”. He also mentions how the first piece of exclusive content will be coming to Xbox 360 first. Tomb Raider looks like it is become an excellent action title, it was unfortunate that they didn’t show off the world, but the heavily action is more than enough.
