GTA 6 On the Horizon—Here's Everything You Need to Know

A return to Vice City, a trip down memory lane, Rockstar is banking on GTA 6 to reshape the gaming landscape as we know it.

GTA 6 is no longer just a dream or a rumor. It's real, it's massive, and it's coming soon. Rockstar is ready for a take two (pun intended) on Vice City. Almost a gazillion "before GTA 6" jokes later, Rockstar has finally had enough of milking its premier cash cow: GTA 5. GTA 6, ironically, has been in development for roughly six years.

The game is set to exclusively launch on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so hard luck if you were planning on booting up GTA 6 on your PC. The next chapter in the GTA saga is being written, and it'll leave no stone unturned to write its name in the history books of open-world gaming.

Despite rumors circulating of a fall delay, excitement is imminent, because why not? It's GTA 6 after all. Also, a delay and GTA 6—quite the match made in heaven. Set in the state of Leonida, a Rockstar reimagined Florida, GTA 6 will bring players back to the iconic Vice City, which, if you've not been living under a rock, certainly does not need any introductions.

This time, however, the Vice City you knew in 2002, with Tommy Vercetti at the heart of it, is getting majorly reshuffled. So goodbye to your Leaf Links, Little Haitis, and Prawn Islands, as Rockstar is expanding the map to make way for diverse regions like the Leonida Keys, Grass Rivers, Port Galhorn, Ambrosia, and the mountainous Mount Galaha, offering a deeper and more immersive world than ever before.

According to early reports, the original development plans even included areas modeled after parts of South America, but Rockstar ultimately prioritized depth over scale. This decision reflects the studio's intent to provide stability and truly make a game for the ages, where every corner of the world feels handcrafted, reactive, and alive, which they are pursuing despite the criticism over repeated delays.

A Cyberpunk 2077-like launch is the last thing the company needs for their most hyped title ever, full of glam and grandeur, so underdelivering would surely put a dent in their reputation. As for narrative, GTA 6 introduces two central protagonists: Lucia Kaminos and Jason Duval. Lucia has gained quite some buzz, and understandably so, being the GTA franchise's first-ever female protagonist; she was first introduced in the game's debut trailer.

She combines street smarts with her Latina flair; she's a head-turner, a heartstopper, and a fearsome criminal all in one. Her co-star, Jason, is an ex-military operative turned small-time drug runner in the Keys. He's your typical antihero. A mix of brawn and brain, he is the ultimate package, whilst also being quite the ladies' man.

Together, they make up a classic trope of a yin and yang pair, simply inseparable. Their relationship appears to be the heart of the story, as the two seem to be navigating a dangerous path through heists whilst tackling betrayal and striving to survive in a bloodthirsty Vice City.

Rockstar hasn't confirmed whether players will be able to switch between characters like in GTA 5; both protagonists remain at the center of the game's drama and action. Rumors surrounding the voice cast suggested that Troy Baker might be involved, but he has since denied any connection to the game, throwing his support behind whoever took on the role.

Alongside Lucia and Jason, the game features an ensemble of stellar supporting characters, including Booby Ike, a Vice City nightlife kingpin who owns bars, clubs, and even a recording studio. Is it even a friend group if you don't have a crazy conspiracy theorist in it?

Enter Cal Hampton, a conspiracy-obsessed friend of Jason's who's likely to appear in more eccentric side missions. If you're wondering what GTA 6 has in store for you, here's one for starters: it has an action-packed story that blends crime, satire, and emotional tension—a signature Rockstar combination. The question you should be asking, rather, is what does it not have?

Two official trailers have been released so far, both igniting massive online discussions and breaking viewership records. The first trailer dropped early in December 2023 due to a leak and introduced Lucia along with glimpses of the vibrant and chaotic Vice City setting.

Memorable moments like an alligator casually walking into a convenience store and wild social media-style montages gave fans their first taste of the game's modern-day aesthetic. The second trailer, which arrived in May 2025, shifted the spotlight to Jason and opened with him picking up Lucia from prison. It hinted at their criminal aspirations and the kind of unpredictable mayhem you can expect as the two rewrite Vice City history.

GTA 6 is not your average sequel; it's a technical marvel. Early reports suggest the game may run at 30 FPS on consoles due to its ambitious scale and size. A now-deleted podcast featuring a former Rockstar animator mentioned that even though Rockstar will push for maximum performance, the realism of GTA 6's world might entail a 30 FPS cap to preserve fidelity and detail.

Even so, Rockstar has a track record of optimizing its games well for consoles, and with the arrival of the PlayStation 5 Pro expected in early 2026, the game may benefit from a performance edge, and recent rumors about Sony working with Rockstar do add fuel to the fire, though Rockstar hasn't officially announced a PS5 Pro-enhanced edition yet. Microsoft, meanwhile, hasn't indicated whether an Xbox Series refresh will launch to match Sony's upcoming hardware.

PC gamers will once again be left waiting. As confirmed by a former Rockstar developer, GTA 6 will not launch on PC alongside the console versions. This staggered release has become standard for the studio, which typically launches on consoles first and later brings its games to PC with added features and optimizations.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick commented on the situation in an interview, saying that Rockstar often rolls out games in phases and that this model has proven successful in the past. He has urged that GTA 6 would drive significant sales of current-gen consoles as fans prepare for its arrival.

The disappointment amongst PC users is clear; Rockstar's clarification does bring a sigh of relief. You'll have to wait a little longer than the rest of us, but I mean that's what we have grown to expect from GTA 6.

Post-launch support is also on the cards. Rockstar plans to integrate new cities, interiors, and missions with newer updates. These updates are part of an effort to avoid rushing the game into a lackluster state. The game has been termed a "living world," where fresh experiences and surprises will keep players engaged well beyond release. This model marks a shift in how single-player games can evolve in real time.

GTA 6 is predicted to generate record-breaking success. One estimate suggests GTA 6 could generate over $1 billion in pre-orders alone and bring in more than $3.2 billion in its first year—more than double what GTA 5 achieved when it launched.

In fact, some publishers are reportedly delaying their own game releases to avoid going head-to-head with Rockstar's blockbuster. There's even speculation that GTA 6 may cost more than standard games, with many speculating it could fall within the $90 to $100 range, which, given the scale of the game, is understandable.

The hype isn't without controversy, though. In September 2022, Rockstar confirmed a data breach in which early gameplay footage and development details surfaced online. The company, as well as the fans, were disappointed, but Rockstar reassured fans that the breach wouldn't impact production, and we all know how that worked out, with another delay pushing the game to May 26, 2026, a significant jump from its initial summer 2025 release date. Despite this, the official trailers have generated mind-blowing hype.

GTA 6 is set to redefine what open-world games can be. The upcoming GTA 6 release is primed to deliver, as we know, Rockstar always does with their GTA series. With just under a year to go, the countdown to GTA 6 has officially begun, so fasten your seatbelts and board the hype train.
