If the World Doesn't End

Games by Grayshadow on  Dec 18, 2012

2012 was a wonderful year for video games. With the release of such acclaimed titles like Mass Effect 3 and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, as well as the return of older franchises such as Halo and Far Cry, 2012 has been a crazy year for the gaming industry. But now we are reaching the end and soon 2013 will begin. If the world doesn’t end on Friday then I’ll have a list of titles that will keep me occupied till the next end of the world prediction. Hopefully the Mayas are wrong.

Dead Space 3
Developer: Visceral Games
Publisher: EA
Platform: PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: Survival horror, Third-person shooter
Release Date: February 5, 2013

Are you real?

Dead Space has successfully established itself as a fantastic survival horror title and the sequel, Dead Space 2, improved on almost everything of the original game by fleshing out Isaac Clarke and improving the gameplay. Now after two Necromorph outbreaks Isaac must another one on the frozen planet of Tau Volantis. But unlike his past adventures he won’t have to tackle these monstrous creatures alone, EarthGov Sergeant John Craver will join the fight. Players will have the ability to drop-in and drop-out of cooperative play but playing alone or as either character will allow whoever is controlling them to experience different forms of dementia brought on by the Marker. With new control elements such as dodging and rolling, different variations of Necromorphs, and a admirable atmosphere worthy of the Dead Space franchise it’s hard not to look forward to Isaac’s next adventure against the undead creatures and his own sanity.

Bioshock Infinite
Developer: Irrational Games
Publisher: 2K Games
Platform: PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: First-person shooter
Release Date: March 26, 2013

It's not Rapture but just as crazy

Bioshock Infinite seeks to reignite that feeling that players had when they first stepped into the bathysphere in 2007 and entered Rapture. Setting foot onto the floating city of Columbia not as a mute character but a former Pinkerton agent named Booker DeWitt is new from pervious Bioshock games. His mission is to save a supernatural woman named Elizabeth, who is being hunted by two radical groups and a massive creature known as Songbird, won’t be followed with silence but his own input on what happens and his own actions. With American exceptionalism, supernatural forces, and a glorious environment there is very little reason not to purchase Bioshock Infinite.

Crysis 3
Developer: Crytek
Publisher: EA
Platform: PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: First-person shooter
Release Date: February 19, 2013

What is Cell Hiding?

Although I missed playing the first Crysis I was instantly hooked when Crysis 2 was released. The varied single-player and intense multiplayer had me continuously playing for months, despite the issues. Naturally I was excited for the upcoming sequel. Taking place after the events of Crysis 2 you take control as Prophet as he attempts to uncover Cell’s motives of building the quarantined Nanodomes that now houses New York. The entire landscape has changed due to overgrown trees, dense swamps, flooded rivers and decaying buildings. New weapons, as well as the Nanosuit, will aid you in your journey to uncover Cell’s intention for these domes but for me the highlight remains how Crytek is going to change New York from the concrete jungle into an actual one.

Grand Theft Auto V
Developer: Rockstar
Publisher: Rockstar
Platform: PS3, Xbox 360
Genre: Action-adventure, Open world
Release Date: 2013

Utterly Beautiful

The first time I saw the trailer for Grand Theft Auto V I was amazed at the quality. As impressive as the first trailer was the second one was simply outstanding by showing the gameplay, characters, and world that you’ll lose countless hours in. Rockstar has rarely disappointed fans with any of their games and by enticing players with such a glamorous trailer highlighting the expected characters, gameplay elements, and world it’s hard not to want this game as soon as possible.

South Park: The Stick of Truth
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: THQ
Platform: PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: Role-Playing
Release Date: March 5, 2013

What abilities does a High Jew Elf have?

At first I was skeptical about the upcoming South Park game, especially after seeing South Park: Tenorman's Revenge. However seeing the new trailer highlighting the gameplay and classes of this upcoming role-playing game my uncertainly was replaced with anticipation. It’s clear that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are capturing the disturbing and over the top humor that the series is known for such as Cartman’s racist remarks and aggressive language. It’s still difficult to see if South Park: The Stick of Truth will be a success or fall short but so far it looks to be a sound interpretation.
