PlayStation 2s 20th Birthday Was Overlooked. And It Deserved So Much better!

The best selling console ever deserved a better birthday.

Due to all the madness of this year, a special birthday was overlooked by many people. On March 4th 2020 was the 20th birthday of one of the most beloved consoles to ever been made, now the success of this console is a certain mystery but it can easily be explained why so many people remember this console, and its because a console is only as good as its games because otherwise, it’s just a big paperweight with very expensive insides. So when the PS2 came out it was very easy to develop games for and it was very compatible with a lot of different engines and ways developers made games, so for that very reason, that is the reason so many people look back at the PS2 with such joy and happiness. Games like Metal Gear Solid 3, GTA San Andreas and Silent Hill 2. Games that are consistently on every top 100 games lists, and I think its more than just classic nostalgia-driven minds. But consistently well-made games, that may have been forgotten by Sony. During this time they laid down the groundworks for these games and incredible works that continue to this day in the PS4 generation.

But another significant point is that this console also kicked off the rivalry. Because just a year later the original Xbox came out, and so they were both off to the races, trying to get as many people on board as possible, but as many people know the PS2 is the best selling console in the world. Far beyond the original Xbox, which can be because of many reasons. Yes, of course, most people think that the PlayStation 2 had the better games, which I do agree with, but Sony also had a foothold inside the industry and compared to its competitors, Microsoft was lagging behind and had to play catch up, this could be the explanation given why Sony has always outperformed Microsoft in sales of consoles even after all this time, so given time, Microsoft has still not caught up. Furthermore, the PS2 exclusives set itself apart from its competitors with games from Japan like the legendary Resident Evil 4, and a conversation can’t go by without someone bringing this up, if someone owned a PS2 they would most likely say it was their favourite console because of all the different kinds of experiences you had.

The question is what were the people supposed to expect from Sony? Well, I would like to reference Nintendo in this case, they do have a history of treating there past products like garbage but the 30th anniversary for Luigi was very special. The often forgotten brother had a whole year to himself where he was loved by Nintendo and the audience, one can only hope that Waluigi gets the same treatment. But back on point, if a character like Luigi can get his year for his 30th birthday. Why can’t the best selling console in the world get the same treatment? Perhaps it was the year it landed on, the crazy year of 2020. What can people focus on other than the craziness of this world, but it is still sad to see the beloved games consoles forgotten birthday. But I do expect more for its 25th birthday, or maybe like Luigi during its 30th we see a whole year dedicated to the PS2 because for all the joy that it brings to people, its the least that it deserves. It deserves a whole lot more.
