PS5 Pro PSSR Update Leaked

Sony's major goals to enhance 4K resolution at 120 FPS and provide 8K resolution output at 60 FPS.

Reports have surfaced online suggesting that the PlayStation 5 Pro's AI-powered PSSR upscaler will be getting some serious upgrades in the upcoming release. According to a recent report by Moore's Law is Dead, Sony is training a new lightweight neural network. This network upscaling a game from any base resolution will result in greater visual quality and lower frame time consumption.

The current minimum resolution required by PSSR is 864p, which is on the high side when compared to options like the ultra-performance Nvidia DLSS. On the other hand, improved upscaling from lower base resolutions should be possible with the next upscaler version.

According to the information, enhancing 4K resolution at 120 FPS and providing 8K resolution output at 60 FPS were major goals for Sony when they developed the updated PlayStation 5 Pro upscaler, which might not even be called PSSR 2.

The improved upscaler will allow games that now can't go beyond the 70-80 FPS range to deliver better performance with improved visual quality, even if some existing PSSR games offer 4K resolution at 120 FPS. According to popular belief, these updates would reflect the quality boost from AMD FSR 2.0 to 3.1.

Though it now only outputs 4K resolution, the next upscaler version will offer a wider range of options, including 1440p and 1080p at fixed 120 FPS. If PlayStation 5 Pro games that don't use PSSR to upscale will instead use MFSR, the internal acronym of the upscaler, you'll notice a substantial improvement in visual quality. As a substitute for TAA, MFSR will produce higher-quality images.

Considering that Mark Cerny basically informed us that they are working on PSSR version 2 and that it will be delivered in 2026, any piece of information is surprising. Nonetheless, it's interesting to find out more specifics around what we may expect when PSSR 2 formally launches on the PS5 Pro.

People adore the PS5 Pro for a number of reasons, one of which is that, unlike previous PlayStation consoles, you can't actually expect performance to improve with each new version. Besides the PS5 Pro, there are leaks and rumors about the PlayStation 6. And people are hoping for something better than anything else.
