Project Resistance is the latest game being developed by Capcom. With 4 players facing against the Mastermind, who is being controlled by another player. The game has had mixed reception since its reveal but we had the chance to try the game at New York Comic Con and came out quite impressed with the project.

Project Resistance has 4 survivors trying to get through a series of challenge rooms that include finding keys and sometimes destroying key objects. All while the Mastermind, who is controlled by a player, attempts to stop you using various Resident Evil enemies and obstacles. A timer is constantly ticking down with time being added for killing enemies and working together. In contrast, the Mastermind can reduce the timer quickly by attacking and killing survivors.

A Capcom representative explained that the project was an early build to test the concept and the existing project could be different from the final game. In the build, I experienced I was able to play as both the survivors and the Mastermind.

The Mastermind's entire job is to stop the survivors by placing infected, traps, and locking doors. Using the cameras located throughout the map you can watch the survivors, interact with the environment, and summon infected. The infected play a major role since the player can directly control them and enhance their abilities. The Mastermind cannot select anything and can only select certain abilities, which are shown as cards, and some are only available towards the end of the level such as the powerful Mr. X.

The Mastermind's interaction of the environment usually involves separating the survivors. This includes locking the doors or placing mines. Once separated, you can punish the divided party member with a machine gun or a well-paced infected. The entire system works well enough with the Mastermind able to track players using the map and having ample tools to take out the infected. But the survivors can withstand the Mastermind's tactics if they work together.

The survivors have to escape 3 rooms by collecting keys and destroying key objectives. The current build had 4 classes that include Hacker, Healer, Tank, and Melee. The Hacker can temporarily disable electronics such as cameras and increase the cost of the Mastermind's cards. The Healer heals, tank can absorb damage, and melee has strong melee attacks. Each survivor has skills paramount to countering everything the Mastermind can throw at the players. It was easier to kill the survivors as the Mastermind but it wasn't impossible to win.

A combination of luck, items, and well coordination can yield success to the survivors. Survivors can purchase helpful items but the key is working together as they can be grabbed and the deadly Mr. X can destroy a single or 2 survivors with ease. Draining the timer and making things harder for the survivors.

Despite being an early concept Project Resistance shows a lot of promise. The competitive multiplayer is intense for survivors as the Mastermind can summon monsters anywhere and suddenly separate your team. Whereas the survivors have to have complete faith in one another if they want to survive or die alone.
