Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

More zombies... great

There's something refreshing to the Resident Evil 2 time frame. Even if Operation Raccoon City does allow you to mess about with the official cannon events, knowing that you're back at square one, Z-day, and the exact moments the T-virus is set loose on the world ranks up there with the knowledge that both Monkey Island games are available for download in their original format. It's that kind of nostalgia that Slant Six is hoping to exploit with its new take on Resi's iconic events, while simultaneously crafting a new zombie adventure that utilises gamers' propensity for co-op action.

It's hard not to see Slant Six's PlayStation-exclusive SOCCOM series' third-person shooting mechanics shine through in Raccoon City, though. At times it can feel like a Resi patch, and this is essentially a tweaked version of its highly militaristic series with Raccoon City in place of a Middle Eastern setting and Resi's staple zombies and monsters thrown into the mix. It's an effective shift, making this feel fresher than anything else in the Resident Evil series for some time. With an emphasis on co-op play, including plenty of zombies and survivors to shoot there's potential here for a worthy spin-off for the franchise, just as long as Leon doesn't ruin it by saving the day.
