At a time when AI and smart technology seem to be taking over our world, it's understandable that there is an air of nostalgia. Many people reminisce about a past that seemed to be a lot simpler.

Retro gaming is a major part of this. Sonic the Hedgehog has been introduced to a whole new generation of fans, with appearances on the big screen. Online game providers are providing players with the opportunity to sample traditional table games online. Roulette fans are even able to try the classic old game for free. Now, 80s kids are playing on the C64s that they got in their stockings at Christmas.

The C64, Retro Gaming

Background to the Commodore C64

Way back at the beginning of the 1980s, the Commodore 64 was the big home computer rival to Sinclair’s ZX Spectrum. In comparison to today's gaming experience, it was basic. However, it did inspire a whole new realm of game designing and lay the foundation for today's major gaming franchises.

Despite its limitations, by today's standards, the Commodore 64 was impressively powerful for its time and hugely popular; about 17 million were sold. However, it was discontinued in 1995.

A new life as the C64

In 2018, the Commodore 64 began a new life with a rebrand as the C64 mini. This new machine was a half-scale replica of the original. It could be plugged into a TV, giving players access to 64 games.

Now, the rebirth of the 80s classic has gone a stage further. The full-size C64 has a functional keyboard and the joystick is upgraded from the mini version.

The C64 is impressively similar in appearance to the original. It's a great addition to the collection of any retro gaming enthusiast.

Hits and misses with the included games

As with the C64 mini, there are 64 games included with the C64. Most of the titles provide a fun and authentic experience, that sits well in the current gaming world, albeit they are more clunky than modern games. Players can savour the chance to enjoy classics like Speedball II, Paradroid, and Boulder Dash. There is also a new title, Galencia which was developed in 2017. It's a well-designed tribute to 80s gameplay.

On the downside, not every classic has stood the test of time. Pitstop II may be something of a disappointment for retro fans.

It's also worth mentioning that the games are not necessarily easy to pick up. They can seem counterintuitive when compared to more recent gameplay. There are no game instructions included with the C64. Players need to visit the Retro Games website to get this information.

In summary

The C64 is an impressive retro gaming machine. Fans of the early gaming experience have the opportunity to access 64 games at their fingertips. They can also add game ROMs via USB in order to load other titles. Overall, the C64 provides rich and fun retro gaming that is pretty close to the original Commodore 64 gaming experience.
