Should We Be Excited for TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan?
Is another TMNT game a good idea?

After leaking early the excitement for PlatinumGames’ TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan has been mute. Not many fans are clamoring for a game crafted from the developers of Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and in their defense it isn’t surprising. Not only has multiple TNMT games in the past years failed to deliver a solid experience but PlatinumGames’ last downloadable game, The Legend of Korra, hasn’t exactly met with the same commendations as their other releases. Perhaps TMNT will break the cycle but judging from the evidence it may not.
Combat has always received positive remarks from games developed by PlatinumGames, with titles such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Bayonetta, Vanquish and The Wonderful 101 featuring some of the best gameplay one can experience in an action game. When it was revealed that a Legend of Korra game was in development many would’ve hoped that elemental and marital arts combat concepts that filled the world of Avatar would’ve been properly extracted and recreated within the video game. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case with combat, while flashy and impressive to look at, was dull and uninspiring. Nothing like the titles previously mentioned.
Another game faced similar issues, Transformers: Devastation. Again, many were excited to see the retro models of the beloved television show recreated in a video game. Best of all it was being developed by PlatinumGames’, however the combat fell short once again. Giving a a lot of flare with no essence.
The TMNT brand of video games has also had their fan share of disappointing titles. With many of the decade long games receiving abyssal reviews such for being generic and lifeless. Releases based on movies, television shows and even great classics all failed to deliver even a mediocre experience. Perhaps PlatinumGames’ can break the cycle but judging from The Legend of Korra and the recently released Transformer: Devastation it’s highly unlikely they'll be able to craft an outstanding action-adventure game similar to their other more acclaimed titles.
Perhaps PlatinumGames’ will invigorate the franchise and give gamers hope, repeating the success of the SNES classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. For now it’s hard to get excited for another TMNT game after so many have failed already.
