The Five Best-Selling Star Wars Video Games of All Time
Opinion by Druuna on Feb 22, 2023
Star Wars has been a force in pop culture ever since the original trilogy was first released back in 1977. Since then, the franchise has continued to expand and influence various aspects of media, including video games. In recent years, Star Wars have given new life to their video games by integrating new storylines that aren’t covered in the blockbuster movie franchise. In the late 2000s, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was immensely popular and even had two sequels released. The series follows Kento Marek, a young Jedi who survived The Great Purge..
Following the release of The Force Unleashed III in 2010, gamers had to wait nine years for a new Star Wars video game. However, that wait ended in 2019 with the release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. We’re sorry though Star Wars fans, but the release of the sequel, Jedi: Survivor has been postponed from March to April.
Even though said release has been delayed, there is still a new Star Wars game on the way, albeit one month later than planned. And in honour of that, we decided to take a look at the list of the five best-selling Star Wars video games of all time. Let’s dive right in.
Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)
This game was initially released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC as a sequel to the 2004 game, Star Wars: Battlefront. In this game, players could choose from a variety of characters from different eras in the Star Wars universe and take part in large-scale battles featuring up to 32 players online. It included an extensive single-player campaign mode that told its own story set between Episodes III and IV and won several awards from IGN and GameSpot for being one of the best games of 2005. It sold over 6 million units worldwide.
Super Star Wars (1992)
This side-scrolling shooter was originally released for SNES and followed Luke Skywalker on his journey to become a Jedi Knight as he fought off Stormtroopers and other adversaries with his lightsaber while searching for Princess Leia aboard the Death Star. It also featured two bonus levels where players could play as C-3PO or R2D2 as they attempted to escape from an Imperial prison complex. Super Star Wars sold over 4 million units worldwide making it one of the most successful games on SNES during its time.
Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (2006)
Released for PS2, Xbox 360, PC, and other platforms, this game allowed players to control characters from across all three original movies in LEGO form as they traveled through iconic locations like Tatooine and Hoth reenacting famous scenes from each movie. There is added humour thanks to Traveller’s Tale’s signature LEGO-style gameplay elements such as building structures or solving puzzles with LEGO blocks. It sold over 3 million units worldwide earning awards such as ‘Best Family Game’ at both BAFTA Games Awards 2006 and GDC 2007 amongst others.
Knights of The Old Republic (2003)
This RPG is set thousands of years before any movie episode took place allowing players to create their own character development path by either choosing Light Side or Dark Side options. Throughout their journey across different multiple planets, players must complete quests while facing off against Sith Warriors or Bounty Hunters wielding lightsabers or Force powers. Soldier, Scout, and Scoundrel are some examples out of eight available classes which helped make this one an instant classic amongst gamers who wanted more than just a basic shooter experience.
The game won a multitude of awards including ‘Game Of The Year’ at VGA 2003, which was in no short part helped by the fact that the game sold over 2 million copies worldwide according to VGChartz data sources. The game was remastered and re-released on Nintendo Switch in 2021, and it is well worth checking out.
Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike (2003)
Originally released exclusively for Nintendo GameCube as part of LucasArts Rogue Squadron series, this game follows Luke Skywalker & Wedge Antilles’ adventures fighting off Imperial forces across various missions taking place. Missions range from air battles against TIE fighters to ground battles against AT-AT Walkers or even during space dogfights against huge star destroyers filled with enemies shooting lasers left & right. It was also packed with an extensive multiplayer mode allowing up to four people to play together locally versus CPU enemies.
The game also included some extra hidden mission modes that only unlocked after completing the main campaign itself. With nearly 1 million copies sold around the world according to official reports published by Nintendo Power magazine back then still considered its most successful title ever until today.
