2021 is almost over and while there are still some big releases left in the year let us look back at the best games of the year. These titles are the best games of 2021 ranging from shocking horror experiences to intense action pack adventures.
Tormented Souls is a survival-horror game that takes the classic systems set by titles like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. With difficult puzzles littered throughout Caroline must travel through the empty halls of the Wildberger Hospital trying to piece together a mystery that has more layers to it than she expected. Attempting to complete this title without a guide will test your puzzle-solving skills and provide that classic horror experience many gamers grew up with.
Supermassive Games hit big with Until Dawn but had a hard time recapturing that same thrill many loved from that title until now. House of Ashes not only delivers that monster horror experience fans have been craving from the Dark Pictures Anthology but goes beyond it. A multi-layered story with several endings and twists as you attempt to survive the horrors underneath the Earth. Best of all it introduced the awesome friendship of Salim and Jason.
After many years Raz is back in a new adventure and Psychonauts 2 delivers on all fronts. A deeply heartfelt adventure as you head into the minds of troubled and twisted people often suffering from different mental issues. With players finally learning from the best the Psychonauts have to offer but also that the organization is not free from dark . With more characters and side content that will have you exploring the open world for days trying to obtain everything. Psychonauts 2 is a deeply emotional journey that is a thrill to play and will leave an impression.
Samus is back and in this final entry in the Metroid story, the fabled bounty hunter comes back without mercy for her opponents. Traveling to ZDR Samus must investigate the reports of sightings of the X-Parasite and wipe it out. Quickly Samus learns that the droids dispatched to carry out this mission first, the E.M.M.I., has gone rogue and killed all those sent with the robots. If you thought Tormented Souls was unnerving then Metroid Dread will send you into a straight panic as these robots hunt Samus down and if caught will shove a needle into her Dead Space style.
Metroid Dread recaptures the feel and intensity fans love from this franchise while modernizing the mobility system. It's everything a Metroid fan could ever want.
Anime-style games have a notorious reputation for being for a specific audience and not going beyond the bare minimum. Scarlet Nexus is anything but this, a deep rich story that does have that anime narrative fans of the genre love but it goes well beyond that. Delivering outstanding characters that each have distinct reasons for fighting and unique personalities so you feel connected with them. Best of all there are 2 unique journeys that have the player seeing the perspective from other characters as you learn more about the Other Suppression Force, those in power, and how you fit into all of this.
Bringing everything together is a robust combat system that reinforces the bonds each of these characters has for one another, relying on one another to overcome difficult opponents and emotional hurdles. It's so much fun as you combine the various powers that matches that of PlatinumGames' Astral Chain combat system in speed and complexity. Scarlet Nexus was one of the biggest shockers of 2021 and one of the best games of this year.
