Uncle Theo

Rant by ILIAS on  Mar 06, 2010

Inspired by one of my brother's replies to "Question of the day" , I decided to write a little bit about the man who has been my mentor in computer games and that's uncle Theo.

He was the one who got us our first computer, an old Commodore 64 which needed an old fashioned, slow but accurate cassette to load games.

I couldn't believe my eyes when he got into my room with this new magic thing in his arms. He did all the dirty plug work and put it to work in no time. It was all strange to me, but I was watching with eyes wide open and all my senses being fully alerted. I "recorded" every single move he did. It's one of those moment you never forget. Fifteen minutes later I saw a smal intro showing this guy...

Little Yianis was very happy because Dirk the Daring was one of his favourite heros back then and trying to save Princess Daphne from the evil dragon was just mind blowing for him. The rest is history...

Uncle Theo kept coming home once every month, each time with one new game in his hands. Green Beret, Ikari Warriors, International Karate, Last Ninja, those are just some of the long list of the first games I enjoyed beating. It was the era when graphics didn't matter at all, the time when gameplay and just having fun was all you could ask for from a game.

I inherited his love for strategy games. He really likes RTS a lot. Civilization series, Apha Centauri, Starcraft, Rise of Nations are among his favourites but  the word addiction  is not enough to  show much  a Command & Conquer afficionado he is. I'll you only this: he has played the beta of C&C 4 and I haven't!!! Uncle Theo is now 61 years old, he has already pre-ordered C&C and we promised to play the first missions of it together.

Song of the week : Scorpions - Still loving you
