Why so serious????

Sometimes I wonder why I support Chelsea so badly, even knowing the fact that my team has least chance to win the Premiership Title. I also don’t monitor their games that much though. I don’t have anyone playing for Chelsea or any relation. I could have join the Manchester United fans and celebrate their victory. I was in a Mexican restaurant having my favorite dish and my fellow restaurant owner tuned the TV for Superbowl league match between New England Patriot and NY Giants. I do not watch Superbowl anyway that much or even I don’t have any preference on teams or I am not a fan of any team. My friends told me to support NY Giant, so I supported them. When NY Giants won, everyone jumped with celebration. I also felt happy too. I called my cousin to know her reaction. She didn’t answer her phone. Later I found out she ran back to her room cried all night, because she was a Patriot’s fan. I still don’t understand why people get so emotional. If it is something like you are supporting your home town or home country (in my case supporting my country in Cricket World Cup), then I think there is logic behind since we mostly tend to be patriotic anyway. People do tend to take these things so seriously. I remember a guy in Bangladesh had a heart attack and eventually died when his beloved Brazil team lost against France in 1998 World Cup finals. Some fan girls in Bangladesh commited suicide when they heard that their sweetheart movie star commited suicide. What a waste of their lives, they could even bear the loss even though they aren’t even related. Even I should quote the Joker’s dialog, “Why so serious??”

Speaking of seriousness, take an example of Xbox360 vs PS3 forum thread, especially in Gamestop and Gametrailers. People are mad serious and keep on flaming their hearts out, cursing each other and their console. Ok I understand these consoles are expensive, but we can try saving our money and then buy it and enjoy it and I guess these flame wars become over. No!! We still like to brag our beloved console. Is this a sort of habit grown into us or just it coming straight from our hearts? It is still a mystery. Is this mental satisfaction that we are getting by doing flame wars? I don’t know. There are also fights between fans from two teams and this is pretty evident in EPL. Same thing applies to anything whether they are movies, celebrities and even in the sensitive topics like race and religion. I guess that’s how the FAN-ATICs came from. Why we are so hateful?

I think being a fan is like being a drug addict. We are supporting our team for personal satisfaction. A win from our team will make our day totally. It’s good in a sense. It is harmless fun. However, it is not advisable to be serious because it may give some harmful effects too and might depression. There are lots of things in life for us enjoy. What we all need is to explore and find these elements of fun. We do have lots of things to learn and cherish about. Why don’t we stop being a “extreme” fanboy? Instead we can think ourselves as gamers and join the world union of gamers, share and discuss anything about games and not pass hate speeches. Why don’t we stop hating each other? Being united can make the world a healthy and nice place to live (after all we don’t have any other planets to stay).
