Ryzen 7 7700X3D Review: Specs, Benchmarks, and Pricing Explained

AMD positions the Ryzen 7 7700X3D as a lower-cost alternative to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D within its existing X3D processor lineup.

AMD has continued to add processors to its X3D lineup, with the X3D Ryzen 7 7700X3D, designed to bring 3D V-Cache technology to the consumer market at an affordable price compared to the 7800X3D. The release coincides with the re-release of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at $350, aimed at prolonging the AM4 platform's lifespan.

Around the same time, AMD's Radeon RX 9070 GRE has also been experiencing price fluctuations in the market, providing a good indicator of retail price movement following launch. Here are the Ryzen 7 7700X3D specs, performance in some of the games, and a comparison with other X3D processors available for purchase.

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Review

Ryzen 7 7700X3D Specifications and Positioning

Ryzen 7 7700X3D has the same core configuration that is offered by the other 8-core X3D parts, with 8 cores and 16 threads, and AMD's 3D V-Cache. We're seeing this chip nestled between the Ryzen 7 9800X and 9600X, catering to gamers who want X3D performance for a more reasonable price. Even though the new SKU, the difference between the 7700X3D and 7800X3D is still very low, so there's not much difference between the two at retail.

AMD has also released the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at $350, which is more expensive than the 7700X3D but provides fewer CPUs. This puts the older 5800X3D in a better position, more expensive on the AM4 platform, than the AM5-based 7700X3D, which is superior in most benchmarks. The current price of the 5800X3D does make it difficult to recommend for those already running an AM4 system.

Evaluate Performance Across Different Titles

With an RTX4090 and tested solely on the CPU, the 7700X3D delivers 28% more frames per second than the 5800X3D at 1080p. However, against the 7800X3D, the difference is slimmer at 2%, and the 9800X3D leads by 21%. These results put the 7700X3D pretty much on par with the 7800X3D for gaming workloads, and those looking to pay for the 9800X3D can reach a higher level.

7700X3D is 14% faster than the 5800X3D in Crimson Desert, a game that takes full advantage of the CPU power. 7800X3D has a 5% advantage on top of that, while the 9800X3D is grabbing a 14-point lead over the 7700X3D. The results here are much more directly related to real gameplay conditions than in lighter game titles, and because of the high demands on the CPU, they are more likely to reflect this.

Far Cry 6 is no exception either when it comes to single-core performance, as the 7700X3D beat the 5800X3D by 12%. As is typical of the other benchmarks, the 9800X3D offers 25% more than the 7700X3D in this game. Gains will vary across the games, depending on what is CPU-intensive or not in each game, but if you're more of a GPU player, the results will differ.

Questions that Still Need to be Answered

7700X3D offers some efficiency improvements on the 7800X3D, but does not offer the buyer a price benefit. In certain markets, the AliExpress 7800X3D is available for less than the 7700X3D's official price, an advantage it has over the newer chip when using third-party retailers. That makes it hard to make the case for the 7700X3D unless retail prices drop even more.

While we know you'll want to include more X3D in the mix, the cost difference between the two chips remains too low for the 7700X3D to emerge as a best-seller. For most gaming builds, that 7800X3D component still appears to be a better value if you already own the 7800X3D and have it for sale at a competitive price.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU

The original 5800X3D was a straightforward concept: to extend the performance of an old platform without compelling customers to purchase a new socket. By supporting the chip via firmware updates, AMD made the product compatible with current AM4 motherboards, thus extending the life of the platform – often it was necessary to replace the motherboards and memory to upgrade a chipset.

It was one of AMD's better decisions for gamers, particularly those who enjoy CPU-heavy games like Crimson Desert and Space Marine 2, which demonstrate just how much gaming performance is driven by its cache, not just the GPU.

The price of new hardware is unlikely to remain unchanged from its original launch price.

This philosophy continued with the AMD 9800X3D and AMD 9950X3D, which continue to perform well in CPU-heavy games. 7700X3D is part of this family, though it may be less distinctively positioned with the 7800X3D in terms of both price and performance.

This was the trend that followed the Radeon RX 9070 GRE when it came out, and prices have continued to drop since its release as people started comparing it side by side with the standard RX 9070.

Initially, the RX 9070 GRE's price was lower than the RX 9070, but the market has since caught up with that price gap. We'll likely see a similar adjustment in the near future for 7700X3D pricing, but with retail hardware, the timeline remains unknown. 7700X3D is a chip to keep an eye on until pricing becomes more competitive with the 7800X3D.
