E3 has had a tough time for the last few years. The advent of the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the usual kind of trade show that E3 has become known for over the years. And now, after a rumor and then a statement from the Electronic Software Association, or ESA, the news has finally been properly confirmed: E3 2023 has been cancelled.

This was originally reported by IGN, but in response to the reporting, a press release was sent to various outlets to confirm the news. The confirmation came from Kyle Marsden-Kish, the Global Vice President of Gaming at ReedPop, the organization that had been working with the ESA to get the long-running show up and running in 2023.

The statement explains that this was a “difficult decision” and they also addressed those who had planned to participate in this year’s planned showcase by stating that: “For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve.” So, this is quite a definitive statement that E3 will not be happening.

In addition, in an email acquired by IGN, it appears that the ESA has cancelled E3 2023 because there was not the kind of sustained interest necessary to continue the show. This also appears to be an indefinite cancellation as there has been no word on a possible return next year. However, the statement does indicate that both the ESA and ReedPop do plan to continue their collaborative work for “future E3 events.”

This final statement is somewhat vague as it does not necessarily mean that E3 will return as it once existed, and with the adoption of a hybrid-based and supposedly “revitalized showcase” in recent years, the E3 that once existed may never return. For now though, all we can do is wait and see.
