The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus made headlines when it was revealed he would be starring in Hideo Kojima's Silent Hills. The game was eventually canceled and Reedus wasn't too happy about the decision. However, when speaking with the Hollywood Reporter Reedus explained "when Hideo described what we were doing next, I completely forgot about it. I was like, thank god that didn’t work, because this is way better."
Reedus explained that he was able to see how Kojima made games and how he thinks because of Death Stranding.
"I like the fact that Silent Hills didn’t happen, to be honest, because I’ve gotten such a peek into the way he works and the way he thinks," explains Reedus, and that "I’m completely blown away by this guy."
Reedus did state he didn't play the demo but saw footage of others playing it and it terrified him. What describing his work with Death Stranding that he was confused at first but over time started to understand Kojima's vision.
He revealed it in bits and pieces, and I’ll admit that some of those bits and pieces I was like, what are you talking about? As we worked on the game, it began to make more sense to me, and now I know what the game’s about, but I’ll admit there was a good half a year in the beginning where I was just like, I trust him, I’m going to do whatever he says.
Reedus express excitement about working in video games again.
Yeah, it’s fascinating. As an actor, you’re acting. As part of a story, you’re in this large story. It’s completely different than the games I grew up with. It’s completely immersive and requires all of your attention and patience. I asked [Kojima] once, "This is so realistic, do you think there’s going to be a day where you don’t need actors anymore?" He goes, "No. You could never do that. You need the soul. You need a real human to have real human emotions." And I was like, thank god, because I wouldn’t have a job if not.
Silent Hills cancelation was a heartbreaking reality for a lot of gamers. The demo P.T. was incredibly successful, with fans combing over every inch of the demo. When the demo was removed in April 2015 fans started selling consoles with the demo on eBay for hundreds of dollars more than the console's MSVP until eBay took them down.
Death Stranding launches this November 8th for PS4 and Spring 2020 for PC.
