StarCraft II Costs $100 Million
News by Fishdalf on Jul 17, 2010
According to figures that have emerged from the Wall Street Journal, Activision-Blizzard has spent over $100 million on developing their long-awaited science-fiction sequel. That total doesn’t include marketing costs that are sure to push that figure up even further.
The original was released way back in 1998 and since then has gone on to become one of the most successful video games of all time, selling 11 million copies, if you include the sales of its expansion pack Brood War. In fact the game is still played by millions today, which is a true testament to gaming, given just how far technology has come over the past decade.
Activision-Blizzard will be hoping for a similarly impressive feat on July 27 when Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is released to the world. If the game does fail it could go down as one of the biggest disasters in video game history, but Blizzard president Mike Morhaime has been working hard to ensure that doesn’t happen, "We've brought in a lot of new players in the beta testing who've been playing World of Warcraft but have never tried Starcraft," Morhaime said. A wise move given that WoW still holds the world record for the most number of MMORPG subscribers of all time.
