XBOX is Reconsidering its Multiplatform Strategy as Forza Horizon 6 Faces a PS5 Delay

Forza Horizon 6's missing PS5 release date is raising questions about XBOX's return to a more focused exclusivity strategy.

XBOX appears to be reconsidering how far it wants to take its multiplatform strategy, with Forza Horizon 6 now at the center of the discussion. The game was expected to eventually arrive on PlayStation 5, but there is still no official release date for that version.

The situation is particularly interesting because XBOX has spent the past few years putting several of its games on competing platforms. That strategy helped Microsoft's major franchises reach larger audiences, but there have also been questions about what that means for the identity of XBOX as a platform.

According to the transcript, XBOX's leadership is reportedly moving back toward some form of exclusivity while still keeping a selection of games multiplatform.

The idea is not necessarily to stop releasing games elsewhere entirely, but rather to focus those releases on certain types of titles. Legacy games and multiplayer-focused projects could continue appearing on other platforms, while some of XBOX's biggest single-player releases could remain tied more closely to the XBOX ecosystem.

Forza Horizon 6 would be an important test of that strategy. The Forza Horizon franchise is one of Microsoft's most significant properties and has become one of the most recognizable arcade racing series in gaming.

The last game did make it to PlayStation 5 and did very well there, proving that there is a large audience for the franchise outside the XBOX ecosystem. And that success would also mean delaying, or possibly changing, plans for Forza Horizon 6 on PS5, which would be a big decision.

The biggest issue right now is the lack of a confirmed PS5 release date. Reports cited in the transcript indicate that the game appears to have been quietly delayed on PlayStation 5, with journalist Tom Warren reportedly not expecting the PS5 version to launch in 2026.

That has naturally led to speculation that the delay could be more than a simple scheduling issue. One possibility is that XBOX could be using the delay to reconsider whether Forza Horizon 6 should launch on PS5 at all.

There is no confirmation that Microsoft has canceled the PlayStation version, but the absence of a date has given the speculation plenty of room to grow. If Microsoft is genuinely moving toward greater exclusivity, Forza Horizon 6 would be one of the clearest games to demonstrate that change.

Forza Horizon 5 also gives Microsoft an interesting example to look at.

The game arrived on PS5 years after its original release and still became one of the platform's best-selling titles, demonstrating how strong the franchise remains even outside the XBOX ecosystem. That means Microsoft does not necessarily need to rush Forza Horizon 6 onto PlayStation to benefit from the audience there.

You could make the same argument for Fable. Recent gameplay previews have apparently made the upcoming reboot look more and more promising, making it another big title that could meaningfully impact XBOX’s platform strategy

If Microsoft really wants exclusivity to be a bigger factor again, then keeping major releases like Forza Horizon 6 and Fable within the XBOX ecosystem would have a much bigger impact than making smaller games exclusive. The strategy has to be the one that focuses on the biggest attractions for the company. Not the one where a handful of less prominent titles are available.

There is also a bigger problem with XBOX’s multiplatform approach. The strategy has had clear wins, especially when established franchises released on PlayStation reached audiences who couldn’t access them before.

However, the transcript also argues that releasing games inconsistently across platforms can also create confusion about what XBOX stands for. If Microsoft wants to rebuild the importance of its hardware and ecosystem, it needs a clear reason for players to remain invested in XBOX rather than simply buying the company's games elsewhere.

Forza Horizon 6 is therefore more than another racing game in this discussion. It could become a major example of how Microsoft balances software sales with platform growth. Releasing the game on PS5 could generate significant additional revenue, especially after the performance of Forza Horizon 5 on Sony's console.

Another major part of Microsoft's current strategy involves Game Pass and cloud gaming.

Recent changes to XBOX cloud gaming have reportedly introduced a 15-hour monthly cap for Game Pass Ultimate users, which has caused criticism among some subscribers. The issue is especially important since cloud gaming has been one of the tools Microsoft has used to differentiate its subscription service and democratize gaming on different devices.

A poll referenced in the transcript also showed how differently people use cloud gaming. Out of 1,533 votes, 43% reportedly said they do not use cloud gaming at all, while 29% said they use it for more than 15 hours.

That leaves a relatively small portion of respondents spread across the different usage ranges in between. The results suggest that the new limit might have little impact on some players while significantly affecting others who rely heavily on cloud gaming.

The reported changes are also complicated by the fact that XBOX is testing a major upgrade for Remote Play. XBOX Insiders are reportedly being given access to 1440p Remote Play testing, bringing the feature closer to the highest resolution offered through XBOX cloud gaming.

Remote Play previously operated at a lower resolution, so the upgrade could make playing installed games remotely a more attractive option for people who already own an XBOX console.

That could become especially useful for players who do not always have access to their console.

Instead of relying on cloud gaming for every situation, players with an XBOX could use Remote Play to stream games directly from their hardware. The timing is particularly notable because the Remote Play upgrade comes alongside the reported cloud gaming restrictions.

Halo is another big part of Microsoft’s strategy, meanwhile. Halo Infinite reportedly made between $300 million and $500 million in gross revenue in its first year, despite criticism of its launch and lack of content to start with.

The figure was attributed to information from Erica Rosefall, a senior producer at Undead Labs, although the range is broad and should not be treated as a precise figure. Even at the lower end, however, it demonstrates the commercial strength that the Halo name still carries.

That financial performance helps explain why Microsoft continues to talk about investing in its biggest franchises. Halo Infinite's gameplay received generally positive reviews, but the franchise has struggled with its content strategy and the long gaps between major releases.

There is also an argument for expanding Halo beyond the mainline games, similar to what Microsoft did during the XBOX 360 era with Halo Wars and other spin-offs. More smaller releases could keep the franchise active while fans wait for the next major entry.

The bigger picture is that XBOX appears to be trying to find a better balance between reaching as many players as possible and giving people a reason to stay within its ecosystem.

The company has proven its games can be big hits on PlayStation, but that doesn’t mean every big first-party game needs to release there at the same time. Forza Horizon 6 is now firmly in the middle of that debate, especially as its PS5 launch seems to have fallen off the schedule many anticipated.

For now, there is no official confirmation that XBOX has canceled Forza Horizon 6 on PS5 or decided to make it a permanent exclusive. What we do have is a reported delay, no confirmed PS5 date, and a broader discussion about Microsoft's changing approach to exclusivity.

The decision will depend on what Microsoft values more in its biggest releases. A multiplatform launch can put a game in front of millions of additional players and generate substantial software revenue, while exclusivity can make the XBOX ecosystem more attractive to people deciding where to play.

With Forza Horizon 5 already proving that the franchise can succeed on PS5, Microsoft has plenty of information to consider. Whatever happens with Forza Horizon 6, its release strategy could be a key indicator of what the next phase of XBOX looks like.
