A new benchmark series compares AMD's Ryzen 7 9800X3D with the Ryzen 5 7600X across a variety of scenarios. The goal is to see how these CPUs perform under different resolutions, graphics presets, and GPU pairings.

Testing includes four games, each run at medium and ultra settings, across 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions, using four different GPUs: RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RX 9070, and 9060XT 16GB.

The dataset, which includes numerous runs for accuracy, spans a broad range of performance scenarios, from CPU-intensive single-player games to competitive shooters.

Testing Condition

AMD's best-value midrange processor is the Ryzen 5 7600X, while the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is used as the standard for comparison. 7600X’s performance closely mirrors CPUs like the 7500F, 7600, 9600, and 9600X, making it an ideal stand-in for that tier.

Each game was tested using medium and ultra quality presets at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K with four different GPUs. This approach ensures coverage of both CPU-limited and GPU-limited scenarios.

Rainbow Six Siege Performance

Ryzen 7 9800X3D outperformed the 7600X by 30%, achieving 57 frames per second with RTX 5090 at 1080p medium. After moving to RTX 5080, 7600X saw little change; however, 9800X3D saw a slight decrease.

Though the efficiency of the 9800X3D was lower due to overhead issues, it's noteworthy to note that the RX 9070 increased the performance of the 7600X by 10% when compared to the RTX 5090.

At 1440p, 9800X3D was 33% faster with RTX 5090, but results became GPU-limited with the other GPUs. At 4K, both CPUs performed identically, as results were entirely GPU-bound.

When switching to ultra settings, the 9800X3D remained faster at 1080p, though the margin shrank with weaker GPUs. At 1440p and 4K ultra, performance became almost entirely GPU-limited across all GPUs except RTX 5090, where small differences remained.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Performance

At 1080p medium with RTX 5090, 9800X3D was 37% faster. With RTX 5080, the advantage dropped to 11%. RX 9070 and 9060XT were fully GPU-bound.

At 1440p medium, 9800X3D maintained a 24% advantage with RTX 5090 but converged with the 7600X on weaker GPUs. At 4K medium, both CPUs matched due to GPU limitations.

With ultra settings, RTX 5090 pairing showed a 15% advantage for the 9800X3D at 1080p, but by 1440p and 4K, both CPUs were GPU-limited except when paired with the top-tier GPU.

Marvel Rivals Performance

Marvel Rivals, another competitive shooter, emphasized CPU strength at lower settings. At 1080p medium, the 9800X3D was almost 40% faster than the 7600X with RTX 5090.

However, by the time we dropped to RTX 5080, the margin narrowed to 7%, and with Radeon GPUs, performance equalized.

At 1440p, the margin fell to 18% with RTX 5090, and at 4K, the difference was just 5% with slightly better 1% lows.

Using ultra settings, the 9800X3D showed a 21% lead at 1080p with RTX 5090, though the advantage disappeared as results became GPU-limited with other GPUs and higher resolutions. At 4K ultra, both CPUs were completely GPU-bound across all GPUs.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II Performance

This game turned out to be rather CPU-intensive. 9800X3D outperformed 7600X by 41% at 1080p medium, achieving 130 fps as opposed to a little over 90 fps. Crucially, the workload's high CPU requirement was demonstrated by the comparable CPU-limited scaling displayed by RTX 5080 and RX 9070.

At 1440p, the 9800X3D remained 40% faster with high-end GPUs, while the RX 9070 reduced the margin slightly. Even at 4K medium, 9800X3D held a 43% advantage with RTX 5090.

On ultra settings, the results echoed the same trend. At 1080p, 9800X3D was 41% faster with RTX 5090, 39% faster with RTX 5080, and 33% faster with RX 9070.

By 1440p ultra, the margin was still 37% with RTX 5090, while weaker GPUs became the bottleneck. At 4K ultra, only RTX 5090 showed a notable difference, with 9800X3D 34% ahead.

Average Results

Across the four games at 1080p medium, 9800X3D averaged 37% faster with RTX 5090, 20% faster with RTX 5080, and 8% faster with RX 9070. Even with 9060XT, it was 5% faster despite GPU limits.

At 1440p medium, the gains were 29% with RTX 5090, 10% with RTX 5080, and 7% with the RX 9070. At 4K medium, margins shrank to 10% with RTX 5090 and disappeared with the others.

At ultra settings, the 9800X3D was 26% faster at 1080p with RTX 5090, 10% with RTX 5080, and 8% with RX 9070. At 1440p ultra, the advantage was 11% with RTX 5090, 9% with RTX 5080, and 3% with RX 9070.

At 4K ultra, the CPUs' performance was nearly identical, with the RTX 5090 exhibiting an 8% improvement.

Final thoughts

When it comes to CPU-intensive titles like Space Marine II or competitive shooters, Ryzen 7 9800X3D clearly outperforms the Ryzen 5 7600X by up to 40%.

However, in most AAA single-player titles at higher resolutions, performance is dominated by GPU limitations, making the upgrade less impactful.

If you mainly play competitive shooters or CPU-intensive games on high-end GPUs such as RTX 5090, the 9800X3D offers substantial performance benefits.

But if your focus is GPU-bound AAA titles or if you pair your CPU with midrange GPUs like RX 9070 or 9060XT, Ryzen 5 7600X still provides excellent value and sufficient performance.
