Aska Guide | All Rare Fish Locations

A complete guide to finding and catching every rare fish in the game.

Fishing in Aska presents a unique challenge, particularly when searching for the rare species scattered throughout the waters. There are six types of fish currently in the game: the common Seabass and five rare species — Mackerel, Cod, Salmon, Wolfish, and Sturgeon.

Each rare fish only appears under specific timing or weather conditions and provides different amounts of meat when skinned. Recognizing the right conditions and knowing how to scout for fish locations will significantly increase your success.

Meat Yield From Fish

Every species yields a different amount of meat:

  • Seabass: 1 meat
  • Mackerel: 2 meat
  • Cod and Salmon: 3 meats
  • Wolfish and Sturgeon: 4 meat

The rarer the fish, the greater the reward.

Bait Options

There are three types of bait available:

  • Berry Bait – easiest to craft and effective for all fish except Wolfish and Sturgeon.
  • Fish Meat Bait – required for Wolfish and Sturgeon.
  • Red Meat Bait – also needed for Wolfish and Sturgeon.

While some speculate that Wolfish and Sturgeon might be caught with Berry Bait, tests have only yielded Seabass, so plan on using either Fish Meat Bait or Red Meat Bait for these two.

Rare Fish Identification Tip

Active rare fish pools display jumping models of the fish, helping you identify the species. For example, jumping red fish indicate Salmon, while greenish-yellow short fish indicate Cod.

Even outside of active conditions, lone fish of that species can sometimes be seen swimming underwater. Learning to recognise these visual cues enables you to scout and mark future fishing spots when conditions are favourable.

Seabass

Seabass is the most common fish, available anywhere, in any weather, during all seasons. Despite the tooltip suggesting it only appears in summer and fall, this is incorrect. You can catch Seabass with any bait, and while they may appear in rare pools, the chances are reduced as those pools are weighted for rare species.

Mackerel

Mackerel is available in spring and fall and can be caught with any bait. Identified by a silvery belly and dark top, this long and thin fish is one of the rarest types. Multiple pools often appear close together.

Cod

Cod can be caught year-round under any weather conditions, but it is somewhat more challenging to find, despite being available throughout the year. Pools may deplete within the year but respawn the next. Cod is identifiable by its yellowish-green scales and shorter body compared to Mackerel.

Salmon

Salmon appear during spring and summer in all weather conditions. They are easily identifiable due to their distinctive red colour and unique facial features.

Wolfish

Wolfish is one of the rarest fish and can only be caught during winter nights between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. There are no specific weather requirements. To catch Wolfish, you must use either Fish Meat Bait or Red Meat Bait. Visually, Wolfish appear darker with slight stripes and a stout body. Look for them circling underwater to identify their spawn location before the right season and time.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon is considered the most challenging fish to catch. It appears only in spring and fall, exclusively when it is raining (not storming).

To catch Sturgeon, you must use Fish Meat Bait or Red Meat Bait. Their pale, striped bodies can be identified by their long, pointed faces. Scout ahead to locate them and return during rainy conditions for your chance to reel one in.
