Chapter 17

Night Arrows

He placed his hand on the necklace and lifted it up. The gold on it was well forged and the gem stones are set tightly and don’t look like they would fall out. It’s good weight and looks lovely around her neck. After probing it sadly lacks the hold for the spell. His eyes gaze along the other ones and all look lovely but doesn’t look like any can hold the spell.  Alessandra lifts a few up and tries them on. Our cloaks keep out faces hidden along with his sword.

Even though we are in Masilen, a city under his control, He doesn’t trust many since he just lost his home. Ricardo looks at Alessandra and she tries another one. They all look nice and she’s giggling as she looks at the rings and bracelets.

“Oh love can’t we get them all?”

“I doubt you could wear them all…”

“Good point, none of this have that wow like the last one you gave me did. Let’s find one like that.”

“Of course my Love, would only be right.”

We walked down the road looking from stand to stand, trying to find more jewelry. They scan the area looking for more, passing food, clothing, even weapons. You name it it’s there. Masilen has it all both good and bad.  The sun was falling faster than they could look.  Alessandra found another stall hidden in a side street. It was rather cramped and only two other stalls but the jewelry looked lovely none the less. They walked over and looked down at each one.

“Be quick lass, I’ve an ill feeling here.”

“I will love, I promise.”

She lifted a necklace with ruby shaped like a heart. The heart was a big as her fist. She put it around her neck and held it, then turned to Ricardo. He lifted the heart and felt the essence within it capable of holding the spell and more.  She looks at him softly, her eyes melting his focus.

“Do you like it love?”

“Yes, it’s perfect.”

“Then this is what I want.”

Ricardo looks at the stall owner. He sits looking at them, eyeing them carefully. He stands up and leans over the stall and looks at Ricardo.

“Yea want that one?”

“I do, how much.”

“It isn’t cheap. You don’t look like you can afford it.”

“How much?”

“900 gold.”

“Hmm, alright.”

A bit of a shock comes over the Merchants face as Ricardo pulls out a bag of coins. He counts out nine pieces and hands them to him. The merchant takes them and looks noticed the value of each one. He greedily takes them all and puts them in his pocket, then looks at Ricardo.

“Go, you’ve what you wanted, now go.”

Ricardo looks at him carefully then takes the necklace. He opens the clasp and puts it around Alessandra’s neck then closes it. It fits perfectly and he holds it up, slowly placing the spell within the heart.  They walk hand and hand to the opening back to the main street. Because of how dark it was in the side street they didn’t notice it turning to night. Holding close, they move along the streets of the most venders packing up for the day.

“Ricardo, it’s getting late. Should we head to the Inn?”

“It’s outside the city walls, it’ll take some time, but we are heading there.”

“I’ll be blunt. I’m a bit scared.”

“It’s fine, I’m right here.”

They walk for a several minutes, listening to the sounds of the city falling to sleep. Guard patrols start to become more common then he would have guessed them to be. As they walked he could feel their eyes on them. He couldn’t let them know who he was, so it was best to keep walking. Soon they are getting close to the walls of the city. When they get to the gate, Alessandra notices that they are closed.

“Looks like we’re locked in Ricardo, were we going to stay?”

“I’ll get us out. Don’t worry.”

They go up to the door and Ricardo soon notices that no one is guarding the gate. He places his hand on the side door and pushes it open. On the other side, still no guards. They both pass and close it behind them. The country side sits in moonlight looking brilliantly. Alessandra shivers slightly and starts to lean on him. He takes her in his arms and carries her as she starts to fall asleep in his arms.

He pushes the door to the Inn open and walks to their room. After undressing her and laying her to bed he heads down to attempt to get some type of meal. Sweet scents still waft in the air as the Inn keep hands him a plate of roasted pork and some baked rice. In joy, Ricardo inhaled every bit of it then paid and walked out in to the night. The night was warming up and the cloak seemed bothersome. So he removed it and placed in on the chair outside. His clothing started to shine at every gold section and his sword gave light to the night. This light caught the eye of someone.

She was a young girl, about sixteen, but she was wearing all black, her blonde hair, flowing down to her mid back. She gripped a bow in her left and was walking when the light caught her eye. She looked careful and noticed what is.

Well it must be my lucky day. A wealthy traveler has settled in my hunting grounds. Looks like I’ll be eating well tonight. She slipped in to the shadows and crept over to where he was standing, looking at the stars. She slipped closer, now only ten feet away. Only now did the sword catch her eye. If she was to get that she’d be set for life. The gold in on both his sword and clothing would be enough to last her a life time. She scoffed to herself as how the wealthy get so expensive things and don’t know how to use them.

She notched an arrow in her bow and aimed for his head. Carefully she pulled back and steadied her hand. Counting softly she got ready. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one… the arrow whipped out of her hand and right at him, going dead for its mark. He kneeled down seconds before to fix his boots and it missed by inches. She quickly moved to notch another arrow, but in the brief second she looked away he was gone.

She stood up and walked over to where he was. How the hell… He disappeared? I needed this, I really did. Fuck now I’m screwed. Got damn it. She started to stomp the ground in anger when she noticed him in the distance walking back towards her. His cape was moving with each step, opening slightly. She panicked and notched another arrow and aimed at him. He walked closer and closer to her.

“Stop… Or I’ll let go and kill you, I’m a good shot.”

‘You can’t be a good shot.” He holds up the arrow that had just missed him “this missed.”

In shock and horror she released the arrow and watched it fly at him. She readies another and watched as he snatched it out of the air. Her eyes widened and then she released the next one. Again she grabs it and keeps walking. She releases a volley of arrows, each on flying after another. They all stop in mid air and turn, aiming at her. She screams and drops her bow as they all fly back at her, impaling the ground in front of her. She falls over and looks at him, her voice losing its power to scream.

He stops and kneels down, handing her each arrow and her bow. He smiles and looks in to her eyes. She’s too scared to move, as he reaches to lift her up she starts to cry. He grabs her and carries her to the chairs where she sits still frozen. He sits across from her and just looks at her.

“Hi, I’m Ricardo, and you are?”

“B… B… Briee Cravyes.”

“Well it’s nice to meet you. May I ask why you were shooting at me?”

“You’re a monster. I’ve never missed with an arrow. How… HOW ARE YOUR STILL ALIVE!”

She jumps up and kicks the table at me. I’m pushed to the ground and she swings her dagger at me. I quickly roll away and stand up, but before I can she swings again, aiming for my throat. I grab at her and miss getting my palm cut open. I look at her, then at my hand and my brow twitches slightly. I lift my cut hand up and release flames around her. Her eyes widen and she faints in fear.

She wakes up to the sun in her eyes, inside the inn.
