Chapter 7:

Blade's mistress

I could feel the bandages on my arms, legs, ribs, and head. I was an utter mess. All of the nurses are girls, so I don’t feel as weird without a shirt on. I looked down to my legs; I’m in the medical bed, but not the medical ward, interesting. I stretched testing my arms, they hurt but not unbearable. My hand slid along the side of the bed and I felt something rather cold, as I removed the blanketing there it is. That sword, the black scabbard incasing and protecting the cold steel that’s killed many, not only for these lands but in my name…  I traced my fingers along the scabbard, feeling the engravings, eras of concealment imbued within the blade, the power locked in its deepest sections. This sword, the sword, from the heart, Ricardo’s heart, the blade that never lets him down…

“Mi Lady, you must not be up, please rest your wounds are too fresh.” She quickly hurried to Alessandra, trying to force her to lie down.

“What? Huh, sorry I was dazed, please don’t worry about me, I’m fine.”

“No we’ve strict orders to make you rest”

“From who?”

“Cole.”

“Who?”

“Cole Dalflorion. He was chosen to be your guard by our Lord.”

“Oh, when?”

“He had asked that the best solider be found then give the orders to protect you.”

“Oh… well I’m fine so I’d like to see my love.”

“We can’t you have to stay here, that was our orders.”

“Oh... wait, don’t I out rank him?”

“Ah… it’s best you don’t leave.”

“I want too.”

“What about your child”

How could I forget, I have out future child within me, and I’ve forgotten to check to see if it’s still even fine. I place my hands on my stomach feeling the bulge, only about three inches more than before I was pregnant. I press down softly moving around testing each area I can imagine important. Nothing, no pain, seems there’s no injury. My luck is beyond me.

“My child is fine… may I ask you something?”

“Yes, ask anything, and I will answer”

“What happened to me?”

“You fell off your balcony. We don’t know how you survived a seven stories fall.”

“I fell? How, I’m not a fool who would just slip off.”

“You didn’t Lightning struck the balcony, the impact threw you off. At least, from the scene that’s what it looks like.”

I fell. How could I have fallen? Not only that, but I’m unharmed, other than a few bruises I’m fine. My hand starts to rub my infant child, smiling that its fine as well. I felt something, other than my child, not sure what it is, but I know the feeling well I just can’t place it. I kick my legs over the edge of the bed, testing them as I stand up. I walk over to the bathroom to wash my face. I grab the towel and dry my face. As my arms fall to my side they hit something. His sword, it’s at my hip? Why? I never put it on. As I step out of the bathroom I see the nurse gone, but a man in a black skin tight suit sitting in the office chair.

“Hello Alessandra, did you sleep well? It’s me. I bet you’re a bit surprised that I’m here. Don’t worry I’ll make it quick.”

He stands up and slides a dagger out of its resting place. He spins in a few times, then swings at her, missing only slightly. He smiles and starts to move closer, spinning it faster. A second swing and it cuts a bit of fabric. I closed my eyes at the third swing, and somehow, by instinct my hand pulled His sword up to block. I could feel the power, the skill, seeping in to me as I held it in my hand. I pulled it out all the way, feeling the energy blowing in to me as I gripped its handle. Now I know why he loves this sword. By the time the fourth slash came I was ready. I parried and then slashed back, steel to steel. The impact ripped in to my arms. I lunged to him and managed to impale him in his right arm. I pulled back and when to attack again. He sidestepped and I missed. He grabbed his wound and looked at me in anger.

“Damn it, I’ll be back girl, I’ll kill you next time.”

He then disappeared as easily as he appeared. In to the shadows, just like he did all those years ago. I returned the sword its home, watching as the blood burned away, never quite making it in with the blade.

“I dare you to try next time… Father…”
