You can enter the Battle Stance by holding the attack and dodge buttons together. This move uses a little bit of your AP. While Zack is in this pose, he will block hits that come from the front.
He will also stay on his feet even if he takes damage. If you do nothing for three seconds, he will stop the stance. You can also roll away to exit it whenever you want in Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion.

Tips for Better Fights
Using the stance makes your yellow magic moves much stronger. It is a good way to hit very hard. To make sure you do not swing your sword by mistake, press dodge first and then hold attack.
You can also hold the buttons while another action is happening. This lets you get ready for your next move early. Chaining these moves helps you win against tough enemies in side missions.

Growing Your Skill
Zack gets better with his sword as you use the stance. This is called Proficiency. You can fill the bar in three ways. You can kill an enemy with a heavy hit.
You can kill them with a yellow magic move. You can also block damage while in the stance. Each of these three ways can only fill about one-third of the total bar. Once one way stops working, you must try the others.

How to Level Up Faster
You can only gain a small amount of skill in each fight. Because of this, it is smart to save side missions until after Chapter 6. Many of those missions will be easy by then. If an enemy is strong, hit them normally until their health is low in Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion.
Then, use a stance move to finish them off. For weak enemies, block a hit first and then attack. This lets you get points for both blocking and killing in one fight. Your progress stays with you if you start a new game.
