The key to success in Elden Ring Nightreign is understanding that different locations offer different types of equipment. Each area has its own specialty, and once you learn these patterns, you'll be able to gear up efficiently for any build.
Churches - Your Source for Seals
Churches are the primary locations for finding seals. There are several types of churches, and each one offers different opportunities:
Large Churches with Envoys: Look for churches with the holy symbol. These contain golems or envoys and have a boss on the main level. To get the seals, climb the pillar on the outside of the church. You'll find small containers with seals inside, plus chests along the way that often contain stone sword keys.
Churches with Basements: If you see fire symbols, these churches have basement areas. Churches without bosses on the main floor typically have catacombs underneath. Hop down into the catacomb area for quick access to seals. You should still check these places even if you're not using seals because they have functional secondary skills.
Pro Tip: You can often find the exit gate from inside the catacombs, making it easy to get in and out. Also, check small huts around churches - they sometimes contain seals too.
Forts - Where to Find Staves
Forts are your go-to locations for staves, perfect for sorcery builds. There are two main types:
Standard Forts: You can walk directly into these. Head to the treasure room for loot, then go to the top, where you'll find a boss enemy and a staff. Use the table there to reveal marked locations on your map.
Bridge Forts: These require you to enter from underneath the bridge, not through the main gate. You'll find a trader here who sells smithing stones. Work your way up through the fort - sometimes, you'll encounter rats or jars, depending on the fort type.
Quick Access: Some forts have spirit stream jumps nearby that let you land directly in the treasure room, saving time.
Ruins - Utility Items and Status Effects
Ruins are treasure troves for utility items. Look for staircases leading down to treasure rooms. Here's what you'll typically find:
Utility Items: Grease and pots that match the ruin's element type Status Effect Items: Holy, poison, madness, frostbite, and death blight items Weapons: Katanas appear more frequently in ruins than other locations Perfumer Items: Special perfumer ruins contain perfume bottles for perfumer builds
Each ruin typically has two treasure areas, so make sure to explore thoroughly.
Sorcery Towers - Advanced Staff Locations
Sorcery towers offer high-quality staves but require puzzle-solving. You'll need to find and break seals around the area before entering. Look for blue walls you can walk through - these indicate unlocked regions. At the top, you'll get special effects or weapon rolls, with one guaranteed to be a staff.
Encampments - Melee Weapon Paradise
Encampments are perfect for finding melee equipment:
Tower Encampments: Climb the big tower for treasure room access.
Standard Encampments: Scattered chests throughout contain melee armaments like flails, maces, axes, great axes, and shields.
Bow Racks: Range characters should prioritize these over chests.
Special Enemies: Look for enemies carrying treasure chests - they drop excellent loot.
Important: Don't skip the chests! Many players ignore them because they don't always drop great loot, but they're essential for melee builds. Use silver pickled fowl feet before opening chests to increase your chances of good drops.
Fire Camps - Easy Boss Clears
Fire camps feature flame chariots that are surprisingly easy to defeat. Simply get behind them, double jump onto them, and use a basic attack for a one-shot kill. This gives you boss clear rewards plus lots of runes and quality loot.
Tunnels - Smithing Stone Guarantee
Tunnels are crucial for weapon upgrades. Each tunnel boss drops a level two smithing stone, which lets you upgrade any weapon to purple quality. Always loot the treasure room first - there's a chance to get the smithing stone from a chest, and you don't want to waste the boss drop if you already have one.
Using Your Visual Codex
Don't forget about your built-in cheat sheet! Access the visual codex through the guide menu to see:

- Merchant locations
- Smithing table positions
Press the triangle (or click details) on the map to reveal these helpful markers.
Advanced Locations and Tips
Central Castle: This becomes your primary focus on day two, offering high-tier equipment and challenges.
Crater Events: If you find a crater, jump in and defeat the magma worm for guaranteed legendary items at the special smithing table.
Armament Replication: Keep an eye out for map shapes that glow red. You can make copies of weapons during these rare events, which are great for power-sticking builds.
Field Bosses: These can drop rare items, so depending on what gear you need right now, you should try to kill them first.
Breakable Statues: Use ultimate arts to break open statues for higher-level loot. Just make sure you don't hit them straight from the ground.
Final Strategy Tips
To do well in Nightreign, you need to know how to figure out when equipment spawns and how strong the bosses are. Focus on getting the rarest and strongest guns from places that are good for your build. While RNG plays a role, knowing where to look for specific equipment types will dramatically improve your efficiency.
Always look at your map to see what's nearby, use your valuable items before big looting sessions, and don't forget to check out the smaller areas—they often have exactly what you need for your build.
