Parrying in Nioh 3 is all about handling Burst Attacks. These are the moves where an enemy, especially a boss, glows bright red before swinging.

While it might look intimidating, it is actually much more forgiving than parrying in other games. To get started, you need to dive into the System menu and head to Controls. Look for a setting called Style Shift and Burst Break Separation and turn it on.

On a controller, the button for swapping between Samurai and Ninja forms is usually the same one used for the Burst Break in Nioh 3.

If you don't separate these, you will constantly flip-flop between styles every time you try to parry, which is a major pain. Turning this on keeps you in your preferred form while still letting you land that crucial counter.

Timing Your Counters

There is no magic trick to landing a perfect Burst Break every time. Like many other games, enemies will often hold their weapon in the air for a few seconds before suddenly striking.

You will likely lose a few fights while you are learning the specific rhythm of a new boss. However, the window to hit the button is quite wide. You don't have to be frame-perfect; you just need to be close in Nioh 3.

Using Counters in Fights

The best way to learn is to be okay with taking a few hits while you practice. When you see that red glow, wait for the actual attack to start moving toward you.

You want to press the parry button about half a second before the hit actually connects. If you hit it right as the impact happens, you might be too late. Aim for that small window just before they touch you, and you will stun the enemy, giving you a massive opening to deal damage.
