Starting with Rain World? Here's everything you need to know to help you get started.

Rain World is one of the most unforgiving games available; there is no leveling, no upgrades — just you. This guide shows you how to survive and progress, adopt a patient, tactical approach, and learn the game's systems.

Early Essentials

Always pick up Rocks and other debris; they are instrumental. Throwing them at most enemies will stun them, but they are most effective against Lizards.

Hitting a Lizard in the head with a Rock will flip it over, exposing its vulnerable body; follow up with a Spear to finish the job.

Throwing any object mid-jump slightly increases distance, which is handy when crossing gaps. Backflips let you throw Spears upward and downward, opening more attack and traversal options.

Improvised Tools and Item Use

If a ledge is out of reach, insert a Spear into a wall and use it as a Makeshift Pole to climb. Item storing is essential: almost any non-edible item can be hoarded inside your belly by holding the eat button, letting you carry objects like Rocks or Spears for later use.

If you want to "eat" a Rock to store it, pull it back out and hold it again to keep it for later.

Survival Mindset

Avoid fights when possible; nearly every creature in Rain World wants you dead. Be deliberate: if something looks tempting to attack, the safest choice is usually to back away.

Expect to die a lot — the game is harsh and will punish unfamiliar habits from other games. Improving comes from practice and patience rather than upgrades.

The Map and Rain Cycle

Holding your dedicated Map button opens a map overlay. In the bottom-left corner of the map, there is a rain indicator: a symbol surrounded by white dots.

These white dots show when rain is coming next; when they disappear, the current cycle is ending. Use that indicator to plan shelter and avoid being caught in dangerous downpours.

Rolling, Falling, and Stuns

When jumping or falling from a significant height, hold down the direction you want to roll to perform a roll on landing. Pressing the jump button mid-roll causes a pounce, giving a slight forward boost.

Rolling negates fall stun, so when dropping from a great height, always try to time a roll to avoid being stunned on landing.

When Death Is Final

You are only truly dead when your character is off-screen. If a Lizard snatches you but your eyes are not crossed out, you are still recoverable: another creature might attack the Lizard and free you in the chaos. Never assume immediate death until the screen confirms it.

Food Sources and Plants

Popcorn Plants are tall red stalks found throughout the world. Hitting a Popcorn Plant with a Spear opens it, providing an infinite food source for the remainder of that cycle. Use them strategically when a passage or shelter is nearby.

Exploration and Expansion

The world is large, and expansion is significantly increased with the Downpour DLC, which greatly multiplies the game size and adds additional campaigns.

Exploration is key: learn routes, safe rooms, and resource locations to survive longer runs.

Threat Themes and Audio Cues

Threat Themes are audio cues that warn of incoming danger. Please pay attention to them: while exploring, a sudden change in music typically indicates imminent hostility or a dangerous event. React quickly when the soundtrack shifts.

Centipedes

Centipedes come in many sizes and are dangerous, but they are edible if you can kill them, providing a substantial food reward.

They are blind but have excellent hearing, which makes them vulnerable to throwable traps and devices like cherry-bomb-type flora.

Scavengers and Outposts

Scavengers are intelligent NPCs who run outposts across the map. Attempting to run through an outpost commonly results in immediate hostility, so a toll is required.

Pay the toll with Pearls — shiny rocks valued highly by Scavengers — or with miscellaneous objects such as Spears, Rocks, Lanterns, or similar items.

Each toll gradually raises reputation with the Scavengers, reducing the chance of hostile responses and eventually enabling them to act more neutrally around you.

If your reputation with the Scavengers is high enough, they may escort you out of dangerous situations, but note that killing many Scavengers can provoke kill squads to hunt you.

Dealing with them is risky but can be rewarding; they are intelligent and capable foes that wield Spears and Rocks like the player.

Realignment and Character Fixes

If the Slug Cat or character model becomes misaligned, move in a specific direction while holding the jump button to realign the character. This resets animation and hitbox issues and is a simple fix for odd visual glitches.

Tunnel Boosting and Pipes

When rounding corners in tunnels, pressing the jump button at the right moment grants a slight boost — a maneuver referred to as Tunnel Boosting. Timing improves with practice.

While going down a tunnel or exiting a pipe, pressing jump causes an instant fall or boost in the exit direction, which can be used for quick maneuvers in confined spaces.

Hand Priority and Item Throwing

The character throws the object in the right hand first and the object in the left hand second. To swap an item from the left hand to the right, double-tap the grab button; this is useful when planning an immediate throw or attack sequence.

Controls and Learning Curve

The controls in Rain World are intentionally challenging. Muscle memory builds over time: initial runs will feel awkward, but steady practice results in marked improvement. Unlike games that hand out upgrades, progress in Rain World is purely skill-based — the better the player, the farther they will go.

Inspiration and Final Notes

Consider how other challenging games like Hollow Knight gradually expand player ability through upgrades — Rain World instead asks players to develop their skillset.

Play deliberately, learn enemy patterns, and refine movement and timing. This guide preserves the original beginner notes to provide a direct, practical starting point for new explorers of Rain World.
