Adrenaline is a core mechanic that influences how you handle encounters across Atropos. You build it as you defeat hostiles, and maintaining higher levels offers combat-focused benefits. This guide explains how it works, how to hold it, and the advantages it provides as you progress.

Understanding Adrenaline

As you kill enemies, your adrenaline level rises. Your Adrenaline meter goes up with each kill, and you need multiple kills without taking damage to get to higher levels. If an enemy hits you, your Adrenaline level goes back to 0 right away. It can be brought back to its original Level 5 by killing five to ten monsters without taking any damage.

You can also boost your Adrenaline instantly through certain one-time consumables designed to raise it to the highest level. Some items also have effects that change depending on your current Adrenaline state, so maintaining it influences how these items behave in Returnal.

Maintaining Adrenaline

To keep your Adrenaline active, you must avoid damage entirely. Use your dash, run speed, jumps, and weapons to stay mobile and out of harm’s way. Every uninterrupted sequence of kills progresses you through the Adrenaline levels, increasing your efficiency during combat.

Combat Effects of Adrenaline

The droid on your right shoulder fires teal homing projectiles whenever you fire your weapon. These shots stack as your Adrenaline increases. At higher levels, the droid continuously adds more projectiles, providing extra support during engagements in Returnal.

Your melee strike using the Atropian Blade gains additional damage at higher Adrenaline levels. As long as you avoid taking hits, your melee output remains elevated.

Your Enhanced Vision, activated by R3, becomes more effective as Adrenaline increases. Triggering it performs a brief scan that highlights items and nearby hostiles, even if they are positioned behind cover or walls in Returnal.
