Anniversary games and hardware releases are a good way to bond a platform with its community and highlight a part of its history. The 25th-anniversary Xbox console does just that by bringing back one of the earliest design trends in gaming hardware. The hardware hasn't changed much, but the semi-transparent green shell has attracted attention for its ties to the original Xbox days and the engineering in the Xbox Series X.

The console's hardware is unchanged from the base Xbox Series X. Still the same console that many players already have, and it's a work console. The transparent green casing, however, brings about another reaction. If you already have an Xbox Series X and don't need to upgrade, the design alone could make you want to swap it for the anniversary edition.

Series X has a Brand-new Appearance

The shell is transparent, giving the Xbox Series X an added boost. The console design is functional and practical, but it's also a large, rectangular shape with minimal detail on its front. Xbox alters the exterior appearance but not the hardware by replacing it with transparent green plastic. It's a design that adds yet interesting elements without changing the overall shape of the product.

In one respect, the rear panel is unchanged, staying black plastic as standard. The compromise isn't that big, since some might have wanted a completely clear enclosure, but in normal use the rear section is rarely seen. The attached controller is equally themed for the anniversary, and looks as sleek as the console. But there's this sense that Xbox didn't do enough to make its own controller into a duke-themed option that they could have included in the box.

One of the most familiar Xbox relics is the original Duke controller. It could have been used in a modern version of the controller to reinforce the anniversary theme and increase the package's value. It could have been included in a modern version of the controller to further reinforce the celebration of Xbox's history and strengthen the anniversary package.

Why it is Important to Keep the Disc Drive

The one important thing about the anniversary console is that it still has an optical disc drive. While much of Xbox's attention has been on digital media, physical media has remained and will continue to be a significant element of the company's operations, particularly for backward compatibility.

There are still plenty of original Xbox and Xbox 360 games owned by many players and playable on most Xbox Series consoles. One of the best things about Xbox is the backward compatibility program, and it remains as strong as ever. For that reason, it would have been a disservice to an anniversary edition to remove the optical drive, as it's one of its most important features.

Seeing is believing: transparent hardware reveals the machine's inner workings. The clear enclosure offers more than just a source of "nostalgia. It also reveals the inside of the Xbox Series X. The sleek, clear plastic designs that gained widespread popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s are popular among techies. Interestingly, this look is making a comeback in several products, because the console is now following suit.

The Xbox Series X setup exposes much of the hardware, unlike products that cover their insides with several layers of plastic and shielding. The outcome is a console that shows its work, not hides it. The black rear panel can also have a useful function. Transparent plastics can be more brittle than traditional plastics, and a traditional rear section may make servicing easier and enhance durability.

Limited Availability and Late Timing

The most negative aspect of the anniversary console is not its design itself, but its timing. The Xbox Series X25 Anniversary Console, like many past transparent hardware titles, such as the special anniversary Xbox 360 and limited-edition transparent PlayStation 4 Pro models, will be released in limited quantities.

Meanwhile, the release is quite late in the Xbox Series' era. Although the design is attractive, many players might not want to buy new Xbox consoles when everyone's eyes are already on upcoming models like the rumored Xbox Helix. This special edition might have garnered more attention if it had hit the market earlier in the generation, and might have been picked up by players looking to add to their console libraries.

In addition to the aesthetic changes, the anniversary console will also be a reminder of the engineering efforts that went into the Xbox Series X. The hardware team worked hard to develop a system that could deliver the required performance with low noise and good thermal management. The console's internal layout, cooling structure, and airflow design are still impressive.

The console is one of the best-engineered consoles, as it still is today.

Xbox Series X is still a very well-considered gaming console. The console's interior design is carefully thought out and well-executed, despite its seemingly simple exterior.

The transparent green anniversary edition doesn't offer a nostalgic celebration of Xbox's past. Still, it does offer a nostalgic look at the accomplishments of the Series X. As a collector and longtime Xbox fan, I find the new features much less interesting than the mix of nostalgia, the fact that I may see the hardware, and the fact that it still supports the optical disc drive and backward compatibility.
