The upcoming horror sequel will feature a new cast, a standalone story, returning character Dr. Hill, and branching choices that determine who survives.

Pre-orders for Until Dawn 2 are officially live, giving players a closer look at what to expect from the upcoming horror sequel ahead of its release. The game is launching at $50 for its standard edition, putting it below the $70 price point that has become standard for many major PlayStation releases.

The $50 price tag is especially notable because the game is a new PlayStation release. The lower price doesn’t mean a necessarily smaller or shorter experience, but it does make one wonder about the overall length and scope of the game.

The original Until Dawn was also quite a focused story experience rather than a big adventure, and it seems like the sequel will be following a similar path rather than trying to turn the series into a much larger open-ended game.

A campaign of roughly seven to 10 hours would easily fit within expectations of a choice-based horror game, especially with replayability in mind.

Choices will be the focus of Until Dawn 2, so you probably won’t see all the possible outcomes in a single playthrough. What you decide can mean the difference between characters living or dying, encouraging players to keep coming back to the game after they’ve finished the main story and test different paths.

It’s also interesting to note the sequel’s $50 price point when you consider how the original Until Dawn was priced. The first game came out on PlayStation 5 for $60, so Until Dawn 2 will be a little cheaper at launch than the original.

That may be due to the scope and development of the sequel, or it could be part of a broader effort to make the game more accessible to players who might otherwise hesitate to spend $70 on a shorter narrative-driven experience.

Whatever the reason, the pricing gives Until Dawn 2 an interesting position in the current PlayStation lineup. A lower launch price does not automatically mean the game will be shorter or less ambitious, and there is currently no official indication that the $50 price reflects a reduced-quality product.

The newly released FAQ has also confirmed that players will not need to experience the original Until Dawn before starting the sequel. Until Dawn 2 is being described as a standalone experience featuring an entirely new cast and a new setting.

That makes the sequel a much more accessible entry point for newcomers.

While knowledge of the original game may help returning fans contextualize things a bit more, the story is not being presented as a direct continuation that requires players to know everything that happened before. Instead, the developers appear to be using the Until Dawn name and its choice-driven horror formula as the foundation for a new story.

There is, however, one confirmed connection to the original game. Dr. Hill is currently listed as the only returning character from Until Dawn. His presence will give longtime fans at least one familiar face while the rest of the cast introduces an entirely new group of characters for players to control and interact with.

The FAQ does not list any other returning characters, meaning there is currently no official confirmation that figures such as Sam will appear. Hayden Panettiere's connection to the franchise has naturally led to speculation, particularly after she returned for the 2024 Until Dawn remake.

And if another character from the original does eventually make an appearance, it would make sense to keep that information under wraps for a game that’s all about surprises. Until Dawn has always been about the characters and whether or not they’ll make it out alive, so revealing a major character coming back before launch could spoil a good chunk of the game.

Unlike some modern narrative games, Until Dawn 2 will also remain strictly single-player. The FAQ confirms no multiplayer mode, keeping the focus on the story and the individual player's decisions.

Accessibility features will also be included. The FAQ doesn’t list all the accessibility options the game has; it just tells players to learn more. That'll give players a better sense of how the experience can be tweaked before the game's out.

Until Dawn 2 will also be exclusive to PS5, with no PS4 version planned.

The decision means players on Sony's previous-generation console will not be able to experience the sequel, but the release is arriving several years into the PS5 generation. By focusing on current-gen hardware, the developers are able to optimize the game specifically for the PS5’s capabilities, without having to worry about the limitations of the older system.

The physical release is another notable aspect of the launch. With physical copies becoming less common across the industry, players who prefer owning their games on disc will still have that option with Until Dawn 2. Both physical and digital editions are expected to launch simultaneously, with no delay between the two formats.

The game's January release date also puts it in an increasingly crowded period for new releases. Several major games are scheduled around the same period, with February expected to be even more packed.

A focused horror campaign could work in Until Dawn 2's favor, however, particularly for players looking for something they can complete within several days before moving on to another major release.

Replayability will likely be one of the sequel's biggest selling points. The choices players make determine the development of the story and the characters that survive. Once players have finished, they can go back into the game and make entirely different choices.

This structure also means that the overall value of the game can’t necessarily be measured in terms of the length of a single campaign. So a seven-hour first playthrough might be a lot more if later playthroughs change meaningfully based on the choices the player makes.

Until Dawn 2, so far, looks to be a more focused extension of the core formula of the franchise, rather than a dramatic expansion into a larger genre.

It has a new cast, a new setting, a self-contained story, and the same focus on choices and survival that made the original. With Dr. Hill the only returning character and the game being an exclusive PS5 launch title, it’s clear the sequel is set to carve its own identity while maintaining the foundation of the series.

The $50 launch price could also help Until Dawn 2 in a busy release schedule. We don’t know how long the game will ultimately be or how much its branching story will branch, but a reasonably priced campaign with meaningful replayability could make it an appealing option for horror fans.

With pre-orders now open and more details starting to emerge, the focus will now show well the sequel builds on the choice-driven formula that made Until Dawn stand outst place. How meaningfully those choices affect the story and characters will likely be one of the biggest factors in determining whether the sequel lives up to its predecessor.
