Apple M5 Max Gaming Review: Can It Handle 4K AAA Games Smoothly
Performance testing across native and Windows titles reveals the true capabilities of the M5 Max MacBook Pro hardware.

The M5 Max has officially arrived, and on paper, it stands as the most formidable piece of Apple silicon seen in a MacBook Pro to date. The fully unbinned 16-inch model features 18 CPU cores and a massive 40-core GPU paired with 48GB of unified memory.
Aside from the previous generation M3 Ultra, this chip represents the absolute ceiling for graphical horsepower on the Mac platform at the time of testing. However, specifications only tell part of the story. The real measure lies in how this translates into real-world frame rates and gameplay performance across a diverse set of titles.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Performance
We begin with Baldur’s Gate 3, where we have the freedom to push settings to the maximum. Running at 4K native resolution on the ultra graphics preset, the ultimate stress test takes place in Act Three within the Lower City, an area packed with hundreds of NPCs on a massive map.
This scenario typically brings most systems to their knees. Here, we see performance ranging between 55fps to over 60fps. At the end of the day, there are no issues running this title at max settings, fully leveraging the power of the M5 Max.
Grid Legends Performance
Next, we look at Grid Legends, a simulation racing title that runs effortlessly at 4K on the ultra-high graphics preset. We experience smooth frame times with no jitters, maintaining over 60fps to 80fps consistently.
While racing games on macOS remain limited, this particular title stands out. Its optimization is impressive, especially considering it also runs on mobile devices, though as a separate purchase. The experience here is fluid and highly polished.
Cyberpunk 2077 Performance
Cyberpunk 2077 has a lot of different ways to change the graphics. When I tested the game in 4K with the high graphics preset, it used MetalFX to make the graphics look better from 1440p. The frame rate is okay, but not great. We switch to balanced mode, which upscales from 1271p to 2160p, to make things smoother.
This change makes performance closer to an average of 60 fps. Even with the most powerful Apple silicon currently available, this title still requires upscaling to achieve smooth gameplay, reinforcing its status as a demanding benchmark.

Minecraft Performance
For Minecraft, we test using the Luna client, a PvP-focused version optimized for Apple silicon Macs. This client offers significant quality-of-life improvements and performance enhancements. Whether engaging in duels or large-scale battle royale matches, we maintain consistently high frame rates.
Although the display caps at 120hz, higher frame rates still contribute to smoother gameplay, particularly in competitive multiplayer scenarios.
Roblox Performance
Roblox performance is tested using a demanding player-created experience called Frontlines, a game inspired by Call of Duty. Running at 1440p with maxed-out settings, the game reaches the 120hz cap.
Despite Roblox’s general reputation, this specific title proves to be quite demanding and delivers a surprisingly solid gameplay experience on the M5 Max.
Palworld Performance
Next is Palworld, a crafting survival game featuring creature-collection mechanics. Despite its visual style, the game is quite demanding and not particularly well optimized for Apple silicon. Running at the epic preset, the game displays at 4K but internally upscales from 1080p.
We achieve around 60fps in the starting area. However, as you build complex structures and manage larger teams, performance is expected to drop. While the native version is limited, we can also run the Windows version through CrossOver at higher frame rates if needed.
Windows Gaming via CrossOver
We then shift focus to Windows gaming using CrossOver 26, a translation layer that enables many Windows titles to run on macOS. While multiplayer compatibility is often restricted due to anti-cheat systems, Helldivers 2 is a notable exception.
Initially, we encounter stuttering, but enabling the prod legacy version resolves the issue. At 1440p with ultra settings and no upscaling, the game runs impressively well, especially for a multiplayer title on this platform.
Elden Ring Performance
Elden Ring is another Windows title tested through CrossOver. Running the offline version, we get the full single-player experience. At 4K on maximum settings, performance is capped at 60fps due to the game’s internal limit. While ray tracing can be enabled, the resulting performance drop makes it less practical for smooth gameplay.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Comparison
We also test Clair Obscur Expedition 33, comparing performance between the M5 Pro and M5 Max. The M5 Pro has 20 GPU cores, but the M5 Max has 40 cores, which is twice as much.
We saw an average performance boost of 50% to 65%. The performance boost is pretty close to the price difference, because the M5 Max costs about 45% more. The game works well on both chips, but the M5 Max is clearly better.
Diablo Series Compatibility Issues
When you test Diablo 4 and Diablo 2 Resurrected, you find several problems with compatibility. CrossOver used to let you play these games, but new changes have caused problems. Newer beta versions of macOS and CrossOver previews have certain fixes.
But the game still has a bug where it freezes after around 10 minutes of play. Despite the M5 Max handling performance easily, stability issues highlight the ongoing challenges of Windows gaming on macOS.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Performance
Star Wars Jedi Survivor stands out as one of the best-looking games tested. Running at 4K on the high preset with MetalFX performance mode, the game upscales from 1080p and delivers smooth gameplay. However, a known memory leak causes RAM usage to increase over time.
Starting at around 20GB, it gradually climbs until performance degrades. With 48GB of unified memory, we have more headroom, delaying the issue significantly compared to lower-memory configurations.
Guild Wars 2 Performance
Finally, Guild Wars 2, a classic MMO, is tested through CrossOver. Despite lacking a native macOS version, the game runs smoothly at 4K on the highest settings.
While the test scenario does not include large-scale events with hundreds of players, performance remains strong. It is clear that the M5 Max has more than enough power to handle even demanding MMO scenarios.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the M5 Max runs both native and translated games really well. We can run recent games on high settings and often get close to or beyond 60 fps at 4K with the help of upscaling when needed. There are still problems with compatibility and optimization, especially for Windows games, but there is no denying that progress is being made.
The M5 Max stands as a powerful option for gaming on macOS, offering a glimpse into the future of high-performance Apple silicon gaming.
